i was sold a plume rock with x-mas tree worms, very beautyful. But they did not tell me it was a hard coral. not sure how to care for it or if i'm in over my head. i see some bleaching on the bottom. i have 40gal with 3-10000k, 3-460 actinics total 108w.

what should i do? LFS isn't much help!

Porites like most other sps like clean water, good water flow and fairly strong lighting. It is a pretty hardy coral but is easily overran with hair algae if present. Good addition to your tank if its mature enough or well equiped with a good skimmer and something to remove phosphates.

Cheers, Todd

P.S. your lighting should be fine as long as the lamps are good and assuming you have a 40B close enough. I have had good success with Porites in the light spectrum your running.

40B? sorry not sure what you mean. So i should move the rock to the upper level? closer to the light? i have never had phosphates in my water, just up and down with nitrates!
Is the coral the tan with white spots? and it the reason some mushrooms are alittle shrivled on one side?

40B (40 gal breeder) which I think has different dimensions than a standard 40 gal. The 40B is a lower profile if I remember correctly. :)

40B is shorthand for 40 breeder. Not sure of deminsions, but you could look them up. Breeder tanks have a bigger footprint, but less hight.

If I were you, I would move the rock up towards the top of the tank so it gets more light. I was going to say you didn't have enough, but todd thinks you do and he has way more experience than I do :)

Good luck!

Just checked, and all-glass (well aqueon) only sells a 40 gal breeder and 40 gal long as their options for 40 gal tanks. Both have the same hight just different footprint so in either case, the lighting will be the same if the coral is placed under the light. :)

40B - 36 x 18 x 16
40 Long - 48 x 13 x 16

Hey sorry for the late response, yes was referring to a 40 Breeder 36x18x15ish. Are you saying your tank dimensions are : 19" side to side, 18" front to back and 27" tall ??? If so would definitely place the coral toward the top of LR structure. Porites will take full on intense lighting but like some of the montiporas actually look better with a little less. Are your T-5 lamps HO and do they have individualy contoured reflectors (ICR), this makes a big difference in PAR by directing the light energy down. At the surface with much better lighting you may find that this corals color is actully quite yellow.

no, my light are not directable. did not know that was an opption.

no, its not a custom tank. Got it at LFS (franchise store)PET____

I will move him to the top

My water is only 18in deep, after the DEEEEEEEEEP sand bed, that I was talked into installing. My mistake for asking one person in the begining.
