I think my tank died

hey all

Things are not good here formy nano. Long story short I put 2 new pumps in there and one fo them died and heated my tank above 40 C and I can tell that all the live rock is dead and I would everything else that was in there is too.

What can I do to get things going again The pump is dead and I want to get my tank going again and wait yet another 6 or 8 weeks to put stuff back in it thank god I didn't have anything else in it but still I want to get it going again what can I do?

Any thoughts

I'm thinking that you'll need to take everything out; scrub off the LR, toss it in and skim the heck out of it for a few weeks. You'll get a lot detritus shedding off...

As long as you're willing to let the live rock cycle again, just replace the pump and let it cycle. Test regularly so you can follow the cycle. Once it's complete, you're good to go!! All that die off will just help the cycle out.

I'm pretty new at this stuff,
but this makes sense to me.


just get the pump replaced, and do some regular water changes
it will be like buying new rock

you may want to pick up some more LR/LS to try and "re-seed" what you have.

YUP, I agree, your going to have to cycle it again, you can't rush this as your recovering from a lot of dye off.
Unless you got some fully cured Lr elsewhere & started over completely?

I have 20 lbs in there right now and I dont want to get rid of all of it. I dont mind waiting for it to cyle again I am just glad that there was nothing else in there. would it be better to get more LR or go with some live sand? I dont mind getting either but I just want to know what do get.

My skimmer isn;t that great its a sea clone and its rated for a 75 or 100 gal tank so it should work well on a 25 lol.

Is there anything else that you all can recomend I do to get thingsgoing again?

I would think that the LR is still viable... You're just gonna cycle again. So giving it time to settle down is about the only thing you can do at this point.

With all new LR; you're still gonna have another cycle... Maybe shorter, maybe not.

Let us know how it works out...

that'll reseed your tank. they have versions for sand, gravel and refugiums...

well taking the pump back is n ot an option because I got it from amazon.com and its going to cost me more to ship it bk then it was worth in the first place. I dont live in teh states I live in Northern Ontario Canada so its kinda hard to get stuff form them. Not have a refugium is not going to make this fun lol I can just see it but its just a small 25 gal tank that can't drill so i will just have to add a little more LR and maybe get some live sand from someone in town here

keep the ideas comming please I need more of them lol

You don't need to get rid of any of your live rock or live sand. If you want to re-seed it, you can add a couple pounds of live rock or the Grunge mentioned above. That's all you need. Take things slow though and monitor your cycle by testing.

Well a temp. of 104F is surely going to kill off lots of bacteria depending on how long it was that high but I think it will recover but you'll probably need a longer cycle than your LR fresh out of the store that has already cycled some. I'd give it about 6 weeks & then go from there if it is testing out fine, why rush? Unless it went that high in temp fast & then back down, I doubt a short temp. swing would do that much damage but If it was like that for hours, then it is like boiling it on a stove, most of the bacteria deep inside will also be dead!

I am not sure how long it was it might have been for 20 mins it might have been all day I have no idea all I know is that when I got home it was bad lol. I am going to get some more LR from my store and go from there. I need another 10 lbs to get enough in my tank anyway so I will add that a go from there I guess

I am just glad that all I had in it was the rock and the water there was no fish or anything so I doged a shot there lol
