I wanna talk about flow.

What most of you are saying is we need to spend more time thinking about our rock work to have the rock work to give it a job and more practicallity?

Well, I wouldn't think too much emphasis needs to be placed on the actual structure or shape of the rockwork (other then spaces for the flow to go in and out through) because you have 4 walls and a bottom from the tank itself for the flow to be directed and bounced off from...:)

Ron (ronj) ...Attaway!!! Go bare bottom:)

Great link thanks Scooterman it will make for some good reading later tonight. I also have a MBV but haven't installed it yet. I've saved some good links from here for reference. How often does yours cycle and do you slow that cycle down at night?
Oldsaint,
Not to steal any thunder from Scooty but just to add my .02. I am running a mbv. I have the cycle set for about 2 min apart. It seems to work well. I have locline fans on the tank bottom to keep bottom clean and locline nozzles on top to adjust flow directionally. As far as slowing cycle/flow down at night. No I don't because of night feeding corals.
Best,Scott

could i use lucite or some other acrylic for the bottom??? i don't want to scratch it up

Ronj,
You will probably want to use starboard on the bottom of your tank. It will help protect bottom glass in case of falling rock in your tank. Do a search for "starboard" in the forums. Also I saw your AG 125....Nice tank!. Be sure to cut some styrofoam to go between your stand and the tank bottom.
HTH's, Scott

i ordered an All-glass and they sent me an Oceanic....it ended up costing less!!!!! when you say between the bottom and the stand, do you mean just between the glass bottom of the tank or between the entire bottom including the frame of the tank?????

Cut it just inside the frame. It will also help with falling rock and help insulate bottom. Can't remember but I think it's either 3/4" or 1" thick styro.

Here's what I was talking about with the turbulent flow through the cut/channels. I went out in the boat today and it was almost flat calm. We had to pass through the cut I spoke about and you can see the difference in the water. This is as calm as it gets through there. When the water is slightly choppy no one swims through there because the more choppy the ocean is, the worse it gets through this cut.

Attachment 1 is the water surrounding the cut and attachment 2 is the cut...You can even see how calm it is on either sides of the cut on attachment 2;)

that is eactly how it is where i snorkel..right at the end of the jetty(rock mass), the water is very turbulent...that is where those 2 kids almost drowned the other day when i was at home..they got sucked out into it..i don't even go to the end because we almost got sucked out before!!

Yup! I was in that calm section outside of that "cut" before and slowly was being pulled towards it and the closer I got, the harder it pulled and eventually I had to grab for the boat! People dive there all the time at slack tide, but I don't take the chance. But that second pic I posted shows how differently rock mass makes flow change:)
