I have no idea what these white things are. They just seem to pop up and never leave move or change at all and feel solid. The red things you can see some growth from day to day and look like they could be a tube worm but I never see anything coming out the end and they too are hard like coral.

hiya ac7av,

red-ish tube things are def vertid snails. the little white things might be nerite snails if they resemble little sesame seeds. can you give us a better idea of the size of the white things?

+1 Vermetide snails...apparently they are bad...They do annoy me...there are many methods to rid yourself of them but I cant seem to get rid of them!

The white things are flat against the rock, hard like the rock and range in size from 1.5 – 4 mm. some of them have been there for over a month and do not move change or anything. The red things are about the same size, 3 mm base and up to 4 mm long.

Could the snails have gotten into the tank on the fish? All the rock was boiled in a crab cooker, pressure washed and left to dry in the sun threw the summer months this last year, very hot as you may remember. The rock was completely clean and dead. I just recently put some snails in the tank from reefcleaners but the little red guys have been in the tank since before I got those in. What are these snails suppose to do that’s bad? I never see any activity from them, day or night.

I had those little white things come in on a rock of mine too. I scraped as many as I could off (not knowing what they were), but didn't get them all. Nothing ever came of them that I'm aware of. That was like 8 months ago and I haven't seen anything new in my tank since.

Regarding the vermitid snails... they're not really bad, in my opinion. If you get a ton of them, they can foul up powerheads, etc. And of course if you run your hand into one of them they'll poke you pretty good and leave a minor flesh wound. That's my only complaint with them! Otherwise, I think they're just nice freebie things to help keep the tank clean.

That’s good to know about the snails. I don’t have any corals to speak of in the tank but maybe some day I mite. So since it seems like another one of those things like bristle worm, if you have to many it could be a problem but other then that its just another kind of cleaner critter. Ya the white things are strange. They don’t change at all but will just pop up out of thin air it seems. mercedes said something about nerite snails. Do you mean snail eggs. I think I have some nerite snails in the tank and the white spots didn’t show up until after I got my cleaners in the tank.
