Im getting the tank ready tomorrow my question is how long should i run my lights on the tank for my cycle??? Should it be 4 hour or 8 hrs or less??? I dont remember what i did last time i set it up :) Thanks for the help everyone

If you just have rock in, you don't need to have the lights on at all.

This is true but if you add a fish or invert for the purpose of running a cycle, the added light helps the microflora and microfauna get going on the rock. Unless barren or the rock needs to be cured of bad algae, a little light for a few hours can be a good thing or at least not hurt.
 
Here in the Northwest people are taking boat rides because they can't drive when the roads are underwater.
 
I think it is a preference thing. If you want to see just your rock or sand bed leave em' on. Congrats on the set-up.
