Impulse Elos 120XL - Custom Stand

Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

When I designed the stand, I always planed to put some kind of fading led lights inside. Then came a decision to overbuild for strength by adding more support beams near the middle-front and back. So when I put a glass door in place to test- Crap!-the new support beams were plainly visible thru the door-cluttering up the design. So I found a set of four target shaped led's and mounted them to the visible support beams like they were intentionally part of the design. They fade and swell all different colors.

Anyway I think they give kind of a terminator/top secret laboratory look to the stand. Are they overkill/distracting?

Okay what is the latest news? Any doors?

I have two doors on now-the other 2 will prob. be here tomarrow!

I was thinking of getting art glass doors, but they were too expensive. I went with acid etched/frosted. Probably should have done back painted glass. It looks frosted, but much harder to see thru.

How are you liking the bare bottom... especially since with the Elos segmented floor and adhesive showing through? I love gobies so I will most likely go with sand again but just curious.

The segmented bare bottom is certainly a design issue that I havent figured out yet. I love the look of a sandbed, but cant deal with the mess. Right now my plan is to grow zoanthids and crusting monties and such on the floor to cover the silicone mess?

The tank lacks movement with all the hard corals. What corals sway in the flow but don't slime the water too much. I would go torch, but don't euphillia foul the water somewhat?

Doors are in!-3 are mounted, but I think I'm going to reverse the frosted side. Right now they are mounted glossy side out which is the common way to show frosted glass. If mounted frosted side out, they have a more raw, matte finish that is harder to see through. I love the look of the side doors-super clean because nothing is mounted too close to them to shine through. However, the front doors are mounted close to the sump, and I made a bad request to overbuild, and added beams visible from the front. The side door looks so simple and clean-calming to the eye, while the front is interesting, its seems cluttered and almost sinister like a computer with eyes. I should have gone with backpainted glass!!! I'll see if frosted side out works, but might have to order backpainted doors in the future.

Hey you can't post like this w/o pics!

Elos 120xl in Stainless

So the water maker and storrage container (RODI) is in and we're pretty much finished. We will probably be adding a piece of trim around the tank at the bottom to cover the decking and still have a little bit of cord running to do;( Matt...that's you...) but other than that she's all wrapped up and ready for show. Here's a few more pics! Thanks to everyone that followed the thread and I'm sure we'll be posting more as the tank settles in and things start to take off... :)

I like it!!! Is your light height adjustable? Is that your normal height? And how do you like going BB with the seams and blobs of the glass laminated bottom showing? Door lighting is trick, now we need to see a video to get the effect! You have me thinking about creating a glow.

Thanks for looking everyone!

My light is fixed for now-and higher than normal while I acclimate new fish and fiddle with rocks. I would like an adjustable light, but budget concerns, and design ideas need to get worked out.-future project.

Sand always looks better-but due to maintenance-I will plant zoanthids/crusting monties/rics, ect on the bottom to cover the silicone mess.

I moved the sump over enough to fit the chiller under the stand, and cleaned up the chord mess some-so I might have to add another whole tank and stand pic

Current issues on the table:
1)move the vortechs to the back of tank to streamline look-while sacrificing best flow stream?
2)switch doors to frosted side out to hide inner workings better-less transparent-while loosing the glossy look?-or back paint the glass to effectively hide all inner workings-while loosing major bleed thru of light effects?
3)need to find 1'' stainless steel trim to cover the plywood the tank sits on

Thats pretty nice Ive always wondered about building a stand and set up like that. Although being in an apartment makes it a bit tough i dont have all the room or resources either.
