I'm getting back into the hobby after 5 years away :) and just bought a 180 gallon tank :D with no internal overflows  . On my last tanks I used external overflows but I don't want to have to do that on this one. Is there any way I can make internal overflows that are some what quiet and safe? Please let me know. Thanks,
Darrell

Dalbery,

IAP (one of ReefFrontiers Sponsor's) makes awesome Overflows!!!! Just before Christmas, I also purchased a 180, that wasn't reef ready yet, and Larry at IAP took wonderful care of me. He even helped me learn how to glue them in myself, as well as allowing me to purchase some Weldon-4 from them. One stop shopping! *Smile*

As for making the overflow quiet, I installed a Durso. Very easy to do out of PVC, and works wonderfully.

Hope this helps.

Something I've done is to cut a sheet of glass (or acrylic) that makes the hypotenus of a trangle with the back corner of a tank. I then put plumbing, pumps, skimmer or outlets into that cut off corner area. The height of the glass sets the water level in the tank. It is silent and highly effective and it preserves the sactity of the box. It is also removable should you wish to change things at some later date.

For mine, I have deep sand beds and put the bottom of the partition about 1" above the bottom glass so that in the event of low water I can get flow under the glass and not have the in tank sump run dry damaging the pumps.

I echo the sentiments on IAP as well as the durso standpipe. My wife hated my previous tank due to all the noise, now she loves it since it is much much more quiet. I love that it is less likely to flood my floor :)

Thanks!!

Thanks for your replies. I've e-mailed IAP and I really like the Durso standpipes. I'll definately build a pair of these. :D
