Iodide-Iodine???

I know iodide is part of iodine's make up, but if I need to dose my xenia with iodine; is iodide going to work in it's stead? or should i get iodine??

there is no test that I know of that will test either acuratlly I do know I do had a drop I mean drop a week mid week from a water change in my 29 gallon I never tested it nor do I know if I need it. I use the brightwells. xenia needs I would think more nitrates then Iodine or iodide IMO

There are iodine test kits and my point is, you should know the levels of any chemical before just starting a dosage routine.

Kent marine has tech 1 a product that i heard is what you use for iodine if you feel that is what is needed, say in this case with my xenia... I have also heard essential elements from Kent but have yet to see a break down of whats in that. I on the other hand already have Kent iodide and am dosing with that.

So is iodide a complete replacement for iodine?

I don't dose anything, just do regular water changes and my xenia is fine. From what I understand, the rule of thumb is that you don't dose anything you aren't willing to test for.

From what I've read, there aren't any good and accurate iodine tests. I add 2 drops of Lugol's Solution every water change (weekly) for my 125 gallon system and watch the tank as an indicator.

I test for all the other supplements I use except iodine.

Hope that helps, I'm kind of a noob though. It does bother me that I add it without testing, but everything seems ok to me.
