I fight extra nutrients in my tank all the time. I would like to hear from you allwhat would be best to take out organics and phosphates from a simple setup. Please, I need feedback.

Thank you in advance.

The absolute best thing?...

Don't put the excessive nutrients in to start with.

No, I'm not trying to be smart/cute - but it really is the least expensive thing to do. It might not be the easiest because it means changing the way you do something, but it is the best. Is it a overfeeding issue, or a source water issue?

thanks all :) Great feedback. Source water shows 0 nitrates with a salifert test. I think the detrius is my main problem. When I do water changes I can never seem to get as much as I want out. Flow too is lacking. I need to clean my powerheads. New skimmer and Phosban reactor I WISH! oops sorry to yell :)

If you are planning on having your tank for very long, a good skimmer is the cheapest way to remove organics. Carbon can be exhausted very quickly (less than 3 days in my tank, when being run in a canister filter), and frequent replacement of carbon adds up.

Chaeto in your sump is probably the cheapest way to remove phosphates (as long as you harvest the chaeto regularly).
