OK I know its not, but this morning I woke up and my Basslet seems like it has a little pimple on the top of it's head. Its the same color as he is, in this case purple. Should I be concerned?

can you describe it a little more????? it's just a bump thats purple????? how big is it????

I would say that its about 1/10 the size of its eye. Its small but its definelty there. I also wonder if it could be ick. I know that ick is white, however a couple of days ago I saw, what I thought was ick on its fin. It was two small white dots. The next day he didnt have any. A day after that he had one on his head. Now its a "pimple" looking thing. My angelfish is fine however.

If it was on it's fin it was/is probably bacterial. What type diet are you feeding? Do you suppliment with zoe, selcon or similiar? How is your water quality? Any chance of a pic? Is it to small to show up?

I think it is too small to show up. Not only that, my camera sucks! My water quality is good. According to my test kit, everything is as it should be. I do 10% water changes every week. Im feeding them Mysis Shrimp. I dont suppliment with anything though. Should I? Could this be the cause? I hope it's not ick!!!!!!!

I highly recommend alternate supplimenting with zoe and selcon. Was the spots "furry" looking. Like a little spots of mold. The fact that it was on the fin makes me think it is bacterial related. If you feed a vitamin enriched diet will help the fish get over it. Stress from poor water quality, and diet etc can cause it. I would invest in some vitamins regardless and change up your food a little instead of feeding the same thing every day. Def do not treat for ich etc. until you know for sure what you are dealing with.

Can I get Zoe and Selcon at my LFS? The spots werent furry looking. They looked like little bits of sand. Are these vitamins or do I need seperate ones? Thanks for your help.

keep an eye on it and post the length of time between when the spots come and go...this will help identify if it is ich or bacterial!!! in the mean time, do 2 large WC's (30-40%)this week...if it is bacterial, this will most definately help...if it is ich, do you have a qt tank set up already????? if not, get some filter media ,a presponge, or biowheel in your display to get some bacteria growing on it!!!

Still has the bumps although they seem a lot smaller. Now he has a white dot over his eye though. Not big, looks like a spec of sand. Funny thing is that the Angelfish looks fine. Whats goin on. I did the water change, although Im hesitant to do a huge one seeing as that my tank just recently matured. My UV sterilizer is on 24 hours a day now. I started adding Zoe to their food 2 days ago. Im hoping this will help.

if it is changing size, you can rule out ich!!! it sounds like a bacterial infection....go ahead with the larger water changes...the majority of bacteria is on surfaces of your tank ,substrate, biowheel, or whatever you have, not in the water column itself....if it is still a small problem, the water changes should clear it up, without the use of meds(if it is a bacterial infec.)even, if it is not bacterial, the water changes will still help, not hurt!!! also, keep up with the vitamins!!

Thanks Ron. Youve been very helpful. Do you think the white sand looking spots (2 of them) over his eye could be ick? He had these same white spots on his fin a couple of days ago.

Can you get a pic? Are they changing size? Ich does look like a "grain of sand" but it is hard to say at this point what you are dealing with. Worst thing you can do is treat without knowing. As Ron suggested I would get some filter media seeded with bacteria in case you do need to QT.

if the spots are changing size, then no, i would say that it is not ich! try to get a pic and figure out the time frame between when the spots appear and disappear....also, keep doing the water changes in case it is bacterial!!

My camera sucks. I'll try and borrow one so that I could show what they look like. It looks like he has little spots on his both of his fins now. This is starting to freak me out. They look like little white specs (about 5) on his fins and larger ones (2) by his eye. This cant be good!

are you sure that the spots have grown or shrunk??? it could be ich...make sure and watch the time intervals between the spots coming and going...get a qt tank ready just in case..it is always handy to have one, even when you aren't using it!

If they are the same spots and are getting smaller, it would not be Cryptocarionosis. You must be careful though that you are not seeing a different new smaller spot in the same general area and not the original that has simply disappeared.

What species of Basslet is this? Many are very "benthic" in their behavior and not uncommon at all for this to be some kind of grit. Low level bacterial infections could be a possibility but you really need to rule out the presence of a parasite. As far as the water change, do not worry about large ones. The bacteria in your tank is not affected by the water in any way except for temp and pH really. The size of the water change will not impact it's health otherwise. You have a waste load (fish) that will sustain it just fine.

How long have you had this fish, what species of angel, what other tank mates, what was the last item of any kind added to the tank and do you use a quarantine?

Cheers
Steve

I didnt quarantine. I should have, but I didnt. I would never make that mistake again. Im now pretty sure that its ick. My Flameangel fish now has these sand lookin white dots on its fins too. It looks like ick. I have no other fish except these two. I have live rock too though. I dont have a quarantine tank either. Im lookin to buy one this weekend but I would have to wait a week or more for somekind of filter system. Will my fish be OK??? Is there anything else that I can do in the meantime? Im thinking of giving them away to someone who could help them right away. I hate to thinkm that theyre suffering or that they need help right away.

without a qt tank, there's not much you can do yet!!! go ahead and get some sort of media in your display tank that will get some bacteria growing on it...this way, the biological filter will be able to get going. the fish should be ok as long as the infestation isn't serious!!

You do not need a cycled QT tank to treat a fish but it is infinately better than the alternatives. As Ron suggests, get things set up and running with a biological seeding source from the main. Make sure you use the water from the main to fill the QT as well. This will cut down on the need to re acclimate but will not improve the biofilter in the least. Do not wait on the biofilter to establish itself either. Go ahead and transfer any fish from this display tank infested or not to the QT. If using hyposalinity which I highly recommend, you can use a meriad of water quality controls that are otherwise a no no if using copper. Other than the obvious water changes; carbon use, polyfilters, liquid detoxifiers etc can greatly aid in the oncoming ammonia problems. Be sure your main system remains fallow for at minimum 6 weeks.

Cheers
Steve
