tested my new 34g solana tank today and was at 0 am, 0 n02, 10 no3. tank has only been set up for 2 weeks. but did use 50% existing reef water and cycled rock. is this possilbe? let me know ur thoughts.

The used water did almost nothing except add some nutrients for the bacteria in the rock to consume. The use of healthy live rock was the trick. If kept warm, wet, chemically stable and not too disturbed, the bacteria colonies living in it will transfer fine. Keep in mind though, that they will still need to gradually grow to accomodate any new polution makers (new fish) to prevent any spike in nitrogen compounds. Good luck!

It's definitely possible to test out good numbers very early. Just keep in mind, when adding livestock, do it slowly and keep monitoring your levels. You don't want to add in 9 fish the first day or the good bacteria wont be able to keep up!

on that note what are excelent fish for a 34g solana thats going to be stricktly sps?

Honestly, you probably wont be able to keep too many fish...but I do like tail spot blennys for smaller tanks. They are REALLy cute and have some good coloration on them! Tail spot blennys also stay pretty small. There's also a ton of little gobys that do well for smaller-medium sized tanks, such as the ORA red headed goby. Very cute as well.

you could do a cupple chromis. active, fun, SAFE. just to say a cupple things there also cheap. 1.99 on reefs2go

you are goiog to want something that is going to be active. just so there is movement in the tank.

added 2 damsels one blue yellow tail and other black with blue stipes. both are less then a 1/2 inch long babies. i have a pearly jawfish in the qt tank hes about 3/4 of an inch is he ok in the sps tank?

Hey Nick, we just added a saphire damsel and a small six line wrasse to our Solana to give some company to the solo occ. clown inhabitant. I don't know that we would add any more fish though for this size of tank and limited filtration. We have definitely had issues with jumpers in this tank though. The rimless look is really nice but anything that jumps has a clear shot to the carpet. I would keep this in mind if you want to add anything more.

just encounterd that 1 jumped out and behind the skimmer had to shut whole tank down and pull the skimmer out. was easy to catch tho.

A brand new tank can not house a Mandrian, you need plenty of lr and a sump and a well established pod population, you will only watch it starve to death

i know about mandarins as i have 1 in my 90 gal and had to plan and make a good enviroment for him and populate the tank and breed pods. would never put a mandarin in a 34gal tank. ecosystem couldant support him i know this from experiance. never killed 1 but took the proper steps into haveing 1 my 90 is breeding pods in a baffel in my sump and can see them by the hundreds in the fuge, but did seed the tank with over 5000 pods. 1ce a week i take the breed media and releese the pods into the display the retune to place in the sump,. hes a lil spoiled and fat right now.
