I have to agree with Reedman. Your tank looks pretty bare. I dont see any bright lighting (MH VHO). So it looks to be a fish only with live rock. A hang on skimmer works just fine for such a tank. I personally would work on lights and more rock, no matter what your future plans are.

Get the rock and water params in order then move on.

I fell into the sump loop too. Years ago, I had my tank set up before I ever heard of sumps. I kept worrying because everyone was always talking about the stuff they put in their sumps and how their sumps were set up etc. I finally realized that while I was worrying about not having a sump, my tank was doing just fine (although, I do wish I had somewhere else to put my heater). So a sump has its benefits, but I wouldn't consider it a total necessity.
