It's started

It's not much yet and still a long ways to go.

I stopped by a small pet store down the street yesterday and discovered 2 nice pieces of rock. They're livestock is never very good but I wandered in while my daughter was selling girl scout cookies a few stores down.

Seen these 2 pieces of rock and had to get them. Lots of pods, a couple of very small red feather dusters, and what looks like 3 or 4 pieces of coral, and some tube worms. i know at least one of them is alive, not sure on the others.

Ever since I got the light from BCT182 last weekend it's been driving me nuts looking at an empty tank.

My wife's in charge of cookie sales so I'm hanging out waiting for all of the cookies to come back and then I'm off to get a skimmer.

Anyone know what these pieces of "coral" are.

Congrats on the start-up! I really like the rock on the left! Not sure what those are....what do they feel like? Hard like skeleton or soft?

The one that looks like sharp deer antlers feels pretty hard. Haven't checked the other ones, figured they've been stressed enough.

This thing has gotten ALOT darker today. Seems like everytime I look at it it's darker.

Discovered 2 more feather dusters and while I was looking at it earlier some small skinny worm popped out about 3/8" and grabbed some brown algae and sucked back in. Did this for a couple minutes.

The tank they were in was loaded with pods. As time goes by more and more come out.

Looks like you are starting to get some diatoms - your tank is on its way. What are your water parameters like? I wonder if the first pic is of an old coral skeleton. Look forward to watching your tank grow!

I'm sorry bswim, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to disagree with everyone else....those are not very nice pieces of rock, as a matter of fact they are obviously hazardous waste. For a small fee I can dispose of those for you. I have a very nice 180 g storage facility to keep those in...lol.....jk :badgrin: Hey that is some nice looking rock. I too think the piece on the left is cool.

Feeling like a newbie idiot at times here. LOL.
And to think I almost didn't get the rock on the left because I wasn't sure it would fit. Actually if they got in 2 more pieces like that I'd pitch the one on the right now that life is starting to poke it's head out of the one on the left.

OK, now the stupid questions start. What is a diatom? And no I haven't tested the water yet. going to get a test kit in the next day or two. Figured it wouldn't do much good to test it since no matter how good the stuff is it will take at least a few days for everything to start settling into where it will be.
It does appear to be an old coral skelton.

The rock on the left is nice

It is a typical Premium Fiji rock.

I love seeing all the new stuff that comes out of them.

bswim - diatoms are usually the first thing you see when your tank is starting. They appear brownish in coloration on surfaces. Here is a link about them: Diatoms

Once your tank has cycled, then you'll be set to introduce your clean-up critters.
