Joe's Wet Dream, A 550 Gallon Work In Progress

Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

Thanks Scooty, I'll see how I like the way things are, then I'll decide if I want to tinker with the OM's,I probably won't want another layer of technology, but we shall see...

I fully understand that, simple & reliable is way better IMO but there is always a butt! :D
The electronics I have is very reliable as not the mechanical side of things, so whatever you do it comes down to being reliable more than anything because It gets old tinkering too much & you don't want junk that doesn't work. I think you can achieve that many ways, the OM option is one I think can be reliable & simplified.

You are spot on Scooty, reliability is everything, I'm sure I will find a few things like the OM's that I will want to tweak once things are up and running...

I tweak continually until I get it that way:D Reliable! LOL!
Then I add something new to freak out on:( & tweak for months, In my thread I don't hold back, what works & what doesn't, If someone can learn from my failures I want everyone to see & hope save them the headaches I went through, or maybe show them something that really works! I love the flow design on my tank, It fits perfectly for my system & I would never get this out of Tunzes or similar devices, hands down but I have major Issues with the Ball on my MBV, the Ball isn't designed for this & I firmly believe this now:) So eventually I will resort to another (OM probably) way to switch flow reliably & effectively as the MBV set-up. Don't know what way is the best at this point, not even sure the OM is the answer & it won't be free to learn what works but I do think at this point for my situation It will be the best option.

Joe,

So what is the status of this tank? Do you have any updated pics you can share?

Kirk

I'm pretty sure he's waiting on the stainless guy to build his canopy and fabricate the stainless surround for the stand. When I last saw the tank it was being drilled for the closed loop madness.

Jason was also finishing off the sump, and let me tell you it's a beauty.

I'm sure it is. Jason built and installed my 375 tank which was a work of beauty. I have nothing but praise for his workmanship.

I wish I had gone for a sump/refugium combo now that I have everything running. As it stands, I will have to add on the refugium separately.

Joe hope all is well. The tank is coming along nicely and all the ins and outs are getting where they need to be.....We'll get the vat sorted out when you're feeling better for the H20 making and prep..

Take care

Hi Folks, I'm back, I appreciate all your kind concern. As sometimes happens with any surgery I developed an abcess, if I had known that I would have to spend 6 days of my life being somewhere that didn't have internet access I would have taken better care of myself.
Matt- I loved "closed loop madness", I will plagiarize it freely and use it in future postings.
Colleen- Sorry I missed your call, I'm home now, hope to hear from you.
Kirk-No pics now, will have some soon. I've tried several variations of the separate sump/fuge concept in the past 6 years, there have always been some glitches develop, they should be eliminated with this design (famous last words...), I'm stoked to play with it.
Eric-things are great, I appreciate all you have done and will be doing with Jason to create my system, I'll PM you with more details.
TTYL, Joe

Joe,

Thanks guys, I got into reefkeeping for the people, not the corals...hmmmm, perhaps I have slightly overstated....

If this is the case, how about we swap tanks, my 375 for your 600 gallon??
(I will even throw in a couple of corals and fish).
:D:D:D

Kirk
(Just kidding of course), but I would like to see this beast when it is installed.

Live Rock

While I was in the hospital I couldn't help but see the salt tank in the lobby, the classic leased low maintainance fish only, with a few dead corals scattered around that were obviously bleached on a regular basis. What a contrast to the thriving mini ecosystems we all try to achieve, it really made me appreciate how far we have come.

I thought I'd put a few photo's of my live rock now that it is cured, at least I hope it is, it's going in my tank in a couple of weeks whether it is or not.

I set up a 500 gallon kiddie pool to cure my rock in, I lined the botttom with a blue tarp for a little more puncture resistance. The equip is pretty basic with a couple of Mag Drives for circulation and a euro reef skimmer. Here's the skimmer, that was 24 hours worth today, does continuing skimmate indicate the rock is still curing, or is it just some kind of byproduct from a bunch of living biomass, or what?, this may be a Mark question.

Theres a total of 800 pounds of rock in there, here's a photo of the overall setup:

There's about 200 pounds of Marshall Island, the biggest pieces I could get, apparently It is hard to find 50 pounders because the big pieces don't ship well and become smaller pieces, it is relatively fragile stuff, very nice texture though, it is on this side of the pool that I have all the Marshall pieces:

The backbone of my aquascaping will be the 420 pounds of Tonga Kailini, there are 7 pieces of it, which gives each piece an average weight of 60 pounds. Every piece is a minimum of 24 inches long on it's longest axis. Here are a few pieces as a group and individually:

There are a variety of shapes. Here is a flat wide piece, thin relative to some of the other pieces:

Here is another flat piece:

Here is a piece that has a nice irregular shape, I'm very pleased with all of the Kailini.

The chunks of acro you see scattered around is Fiji Totoka, a lot of that will go in the pod fuge.

I won't be able to lift more than 10 pounds for a couple of months with my new incision, if I had to stare at an empty tank for 2 months I might redifine the phrase "going postal". My thanks to Eric of Veralte Aquatics, he has stepped up to the plate and will take care of my aquascaping, I can't wait to see what he comes up with, the man has a lot of talent. That's about all my pet rock stuff, hopefully
I will get off my butt and get some tank photos up soon....
