you could make a top with a wooden frame and smaller welded wire. that's what i use on my kingsnakes cage.
the holes are smaller than on the eggcrate.
i suppose i could make this top also...

Well, its been 2 days and my blue spot jawfish looks fine. Really makes me wonder how long he was on the floor and how much time did he have left when I found him.
I covered all the areas around the light with cardboard, and under my CF lights I put a peice of "hardward cloth" which is a plastic net, smaller holes than the egg crate. The only problem with that is the hardward cloth came on a roll, and its not flat, so there is a space between the egg crate and the hardware cloth. If he really wanted to jump through the eggcrate there the mesh would not stop him. I am hoping the heat from the lights will flatten it out a bit.
I still can't believe thatI found the most expensive fish I ever bought on the floor and he lived. I think I am going to go buy a lotto.
