I've used it in the past with no apparent pitfalls. It was on my 90g and I had it up and running for a tad over 3 years.
 
Yes, you can use spray paint on PVC that will be inside of your tank. Make sure to prep it well and let it cure otherwise it will flake off. I used to use paint on all my in tank PVC but eventually came to the conclusion that it isnt really necessary because sooner or later becomes encrusted with coraline algea and blends in with out the extra work.
 
I've always used it myself with no issues. Actually the only type of spray paint I will use. :)

I sprayed a piece of scrap PVC and let it dry 24 hrs. The paint comes of the pipe very easily if scratched. I have decided to keep it white and wait for the coraline algea to cover it. Thanks for the input though :)
