How High To Mount Halide?
I'm wondering just how high I need to mount my halide.

I'll be installing a 250w Radium with a galaxy switchable ballast and a Lumen max elite reflector over a 40b.

I think you would do good mounting it approx 16" - 18" above the water surface.
That would be close enough to cover the tank top to bottom. Might even be able to go a little higher.

I'm going to have to rebuild the canopy then because if I mount it inside as is the light bulb will only be 8 inchs away form the water. :(

16" might be a little high, but a single halide over a 40b, 8" off the water I think would definately be too close. I dont think you would get coverage over the whole tank.

Ok so I mounted the halide.

This really opened up work space above the tank.

All in all I really like the MH.

I also remove the sand bed. I've had to move the tank 3 times now. :(

Update time..
I lost almost all of my sps do to a nitrate issue. Although the zoo's seemed to love it:frusty:

I say almost all, The one's I purchased to see if I could keep sps are just hanging on right now and I moved the one's the were the most sensitive to a friends tank. :(

Thanks, right now I'm about to rename the tank 40 gallons of death.

Lost a purple pseudochromis this week. guess I'm a bit frustrated right now.

We learn from our setbacks and it's OK to be frustrated.
There are many way's to deal with high Nitrates....

Happy ReefN,

Ok so I think the tank has finally stabilized and the die off has stopped.(sad)

After a couple of weeks of small water changes I bit the bullet and we did four large changes 30ish gallons each. Now the nitrates are down to roughly 15 (ppm)

I thought about listing eveything I lost but I think it would be faster just to list the things that I still have.

Westside Tri-color
I'm going to have to ad to this later.

The survivors are all great corals.
Post in the classifieds the ones you are looking for. And if you have pics of the ones you had, it would help.

Thanks I'll do that as soon as I put the list together of what I lost. Right now my mind is still trying to shy away from it.

I did a bad thing.

I gave my tank a freshwater dip. :jaw:

I poured in six gallons of freshwater that I thought was salt. So my tank went from 35 parts to 20 in less than a min.
Luckily I had ten gallons of salt on hand and managed to bring the tank back up to 30 parts with enough extra volume in the sump to bring the salt back to 35 parts after the
evaporation.

So far there doesn't seem to be any negative side effects.
