Led light mount rail

Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

I have a new LED hanging unit that, for the life of me, I can't figure how to hang over my 10 gallon reef tank.

The LED unit is one of those excessively bright (though completely dimmable) 120 watt monstrosities. It measures 16 inches long (from end to end) and 8 1/2 inches front to back. It weighs around 8 pounds.

I'd like to find a way to build a stand that would fit around the tank shelving unit, or figure out a way to hang it from the wall.

Any suggestions out there?

Thanks!

Hi mfinn,

The fixture is one of these: reefbreeders

It has an odd connector layout. The tank itself sits on one of those popular two shelf wire stands that are sold at stores like Walmart and Target. Attaching the typical hanger/stand to one of these sounds a bit difficult.

I'm currently thinking of making a stand with 2 by 4's. Can't seem to figure anything else out at this point.

Well, first off, using a 120 watt Evergrow fixture over a 10 gallon tank seems,,,,,,,,,,,well, a bit excessive.

But,,, whatever. Not judging. :)

What you could do is make a light stand that would sit on the same shelf as the tank.
Click on " My 240" and go to the last page and see the led hanging rack I made. Then think of the legs going on the outside of the tank and extending down to the shelf the tank sits on.
There are a number of different materials you could use.
I've seen some very useable light racks made this way using pvc pipe and pvc fittings.

Excessive? You've got that right! Let's just say that they're a part of my future plans. Since I have em, I may as well use em, eh? They're dimmable to zero, so they'll work.

The tank pretty much takes up the entire shelf. I guess I could build a stand that rests on the shelf below... On my way to Lowes and Home Depot in a few minutes. I'll wonder their aisles again this afternoon for more ideas. Will check out PVC.

Thanks, mfinn. :)

Could be a real cool mount.
I'd just want to make sure the last knuckle rolled completely over and then a little, so the lights could be tipped a tiny bit to the back of the tank, incase you had some light bleed out.

I came across this whenlooking for designs on a led lght rack for my 180. How did you mount your fixture to your tank? Did you have the bottom side rails cut to slide over your aquarium trim?

you are going to have to be more specific with your question as there are several people in the thread.
