I was curious about some LED pendants for a 48x48x19" tank. If I was going to run 2 pendants how many LEDS would you use with what kind of optics? I am looking to control them with an Neptune APEX so the whites and blues would be on separate drivers.

Hey Seth, what type/size pendants do you have or intend to build? Is this for a reeftank or FOWLR system? I have looked into retrofitting/ recycling old fixtures from Good-Will etc.. that have a cool look factor to them. Frye's and newegg.com have numerous heatsinks with fans attached that could be used for applying LED's just depends on how many needed and what kind of look your after.

Cheers, Todd

Well the size of the pendants will directly be decided by the number of LEDs. I am probably going to use straight finned aluminum heatsink and then build a lighting rack to run all the wires through.

Oh and it will be a mixed reef. SPS on the top LPS and polyps along the bottom.

Clams etc.

Right now I just built a pendent with a single 50w LED Chip. I was kind of curious about the color of these as it stated that they are a 12k mixture of blues and white. And to my suprise it looks awesome. Way to much power though. I mean it lights up my garage like it was daytime. The only problem I had was the cooling on that thing. I have a 175w heatsink with copper transfer pipes, and it still ran warmer then I would like. So I included an active cooling system on it, a fan. So once I wire in the power for that I will let you guys know what it looks like.

Floyd, very cool can't wait to see it. Would one of the hard drive heatsinks with attached 92mm fan be enough for this unit?

Todd

Right now I am using one of these for the heatsink's
NEW AMD 64 X2 CPU Fan and Copper Pipe Heatsink

I planned on running 3 of these in my hood the spread is awesome and the light output is amazing. Not sure how efficient they are as far as LED's are concerned, but it is still way more efficient then my halides. 50wx3 vs 250wx3

I will post pictures of my prototype here shortly.

The 12k is really a crisp cool bluish white. Besides once you supplement it with blue LED's then it can become what ever temp you want.

That's awsome Floyd, could you please send me the links to the LED's and the waterproof drivers if you wouldn't mind. I'm thinking that DIY LED Builds could/ should be our topic to next North Sound Reefers meeting. Hopefully I'll have my framework welded up by then.

Seth, I think that you could easily modify this unit by adding a handful of 1w blue led's to perimeter.

Hey Seth...Any particular reason why you want to switch to L.E.D's? Are you having heat issues or want to cut down on electricity etc?? Just curious...Also, on the 12K color. What about that spectrum aren't you too sure about? Not blue enough for you or too blue for your taste? :)

I want less power consumption as the Greenhouse will be pulling enough as is and also the cooler running temps. Not to mention the actinic glow from LEDS is amazing.

I prefer a color closer to 15K during the day and deep blue at night. For example i run ATI blue plus for my T5 supplement.

Cool! Next build I want to go with LEDs. I like a lot of what I have seen of them. The shimmer alone amazes me from these things and some actually have great PAR ratings.

So it seems your a "blue" type guy. I was that way for a bit and then fell in love with the 14k Phoenix bulb compared to my 20k XM. Nice medium for me.

Good luck with the switch over if you go that route. :)

Now that's cool Floyd. I saw the pic and thought "what the heck would he post a lousy pic like that for?" :D Now the vid make total sense. That's pretty dang bright for a single LED. How many do you think would be needed for a 180. Our build is going to be topped with LED right off the bat now so we are looking for options. Do you think blue LED's could supplement this without getting washed out by the 50w'er?

Here is what I have planned for my 180.

20w(rB) 20w(rB)
50W (12k)
20w(rB) 20W(rB)

This will be times 3. I think that it will give perfect color. If not I will just dim one or the other down.
