LED vs T-5

I really wish i could find a side by side comparison with T-5's and LEDs' with and without MH on..

I already did.:p

IM waiting for a phone call to see if there will be a reef illuminations fixture at the frag swap for you to see and compare first hand.

I am doing research now and plan to swap my 4 250w MH pandants for LEDs over the next
year.

Love the nighttime flourescence of those corals under the 403's...now the gears are turning.

Adam - any chance the ICECAP guy at the swap will be demoing these?

Todd from cherry corals is bringing a aqua illuminations led fixture to lighthis corals at the swap!!! :)

well I had a friend come over this weekend with a UV led flashlight..
It was AMAZING some of the colors I didn't know were even there..
My common pink chalice is actually like a rainbow under these lights..
So I wanna pick up some leds for these colors to pop out..

SERIOUSLY! I know exactly what you mean with this. I use an LED flashlight to look in my tank at night and, even though it is super white LED, it brings out colors and fluorescents that I would never have expected. I'd be very curious to see your tank exposed to LED actinic-ish light.

From my experience these, they put out some nice light, i had on my 34g tank 4 blues & 4 whites, but when I turned on the 250w MH it washed them out completely.

IMO: I'd say you will need your actinics.

Too cool - I can't wait to see what they look like at the swap. I've been drawn to this technology for a long time - however just like the T-5's when they first arrived on scene, it takes a bit of time for the mfr's to get the bugs worked out. It may be at that point where they could be a viable option...and the price will start to drop too! ;o)

That sounds awesome. All this discussion about led reminds me that i have 2 bars of actinic icecap power brights! Im going to diy them into my hood right now! lol Thanks!
Also let us know how bright the first ones are if you get them. If there as bright as the power brights they'll be awesome and ill most likely buy 2.

if you are just using them for some night viewing they will probably work alright. I've worked with alot of the LED units (8 reef tanks fully lit by LED's...all over 180g tanks) and if you plan on using them to replace your current lighting I'd say hold off a bit. In the long term, IME the LED units cause alot of corals (LPS especially) to bleach out and actually lose alot of their color. As a supplemental "moon" light they're great but for lighting your tank LED's fall short in many ways.

That is what I heard about LEDs also Treehugger. From what I've heard, read and having used BP already the LED beams are to focused and not enough spread and can cause LPS and zoas to lose color and close up over time. I am still intrigued by them though as I think they will be the choiced lighting option in the near future. Yeah it is an expensive piece of equipment up front but all the savings you would save at the back end is such as power consumption and bulb replacements are very minimal. I am all for using equipment that is energy efficient.
