Folks,

Most of the LFS's in our area, including the one I regularly visit, don't carry ORA products. The reason, according my LFS anyway, is the large bulk ordering requirements that ORA imposes. I asked my LFS if they would consider doing a group order with PSAS. They were very amenable to the idea. This would benefit both the club and the LFS: the LFS gets access to stock they don't normally carry and the PSAS would benefit from the lower prices of ORA's stock. So, would someone from the PSAS staff please comment?

Thanks,

OnTheReef

So assuming a combo of PSAS members and LFSs are able to meet the bulk ordering requirements, the PSAS members could get ORA stock at cost, and the balance of the order would be paid for by the LFS and they would sell that at their retail store, correct?

That seems like a pretty good idea, at least worth checking into for the specifics.

Re: ORA and LFS

Well, I presume the LFS would mark up the wholsale of ORA a bit and there are shipping costs which would be amortized over the individuals in the order, but yes, you have the gist of what I am hoping for.

ORA: what and why

I (and others here) are interested in ORA for two reasons:
1) Their fish are captive bred and we are trying to encourage this within our hobby.
2) Their fish are considerably less expensive than the same species imported from the Pacific Rim. For example, Japan-caught neon gobies retail for $45, while ORA's neon gobies retail for $10.

I think the PSAS in general is doing quite well as far as SPS frags are concerned, but my LFS expressed interest in carrying a few of the ORA corals as well.

Hey, sorry to jump in here, but I thought Blue Sierra out in Issaquah carries ORA raised fish as a standard item. It might be worth giving them a call to confirm if they have what you want.

Also, I know for certain they offer PSAS members a discount when you show your membership card.

As far as ORA corals, are they different from the frags that LFS buy and sell from local reefers?

just to charm in, ORA also has farm rasied clams that look very nice as well.

I've bought ORA clowns from Blue Sierra. Are they still carrying them? Which store were you working with?

Rob, I think you are right, and I even believe PetCo carries ORA clowns, but in either place that is the only fish I've noticed. Considering the popularity of Clowns, it is probably the only one they feel comfortable buying in large quantities. Perhaps a partnership could open up some other stock?

We just ordered from ORA a last week and they had no minimum order. We got about 15 sps frags, 4 clams, and about 20 fish. What is their minimum? Just wondering I guess we met it…

I manage a LFS. I am ordering again this week and the order will only be about $2-300. They never mentioned a minimal order.
