I realize the best lighting for clams is metal halide but can they be kept with VHO?I have a 75 gal. with 4 ,110 watt bulbs. Two white 12000K,and two blue actinic.

Tridacna derasa, T. squamosa and H. hippopus can be kept under less than halide lighting. I would not attempt to keep T. maxima unless it's maybe a gold or T.crocea under less than good halides.

I have a small maxima, blue, under 4 96 watt pc bulbs. Its growth is not very high. I have had good success with T. Deresa under pc. I would have to say if I had to do over I would not put maxima under P.C. lighting. I have seen deresa do well under pc, and vho. HTH Steve

I had a derasa under NO flourescent lighting in a fifty for 2 years and he did fine, but I agree with everyone else and would avoid the maximas and the croceas. But as I have seen in this hobby something may work for some and not for others. Good Luck.

Yeah I agree. For cro's and max's you had better be safe with halide. Not so much the watts, but the intensity is what they need. I kept a derasa under NO flourecents too and he was fine. Hope this helps.

I Had Thought A Bout Doing A Clam In My Tank I Use Vho's Same As Above. Are There Any Inverts That Youneed To Be Careful Of?

pc/vs vho

from my limited knowledge of lighting i seem to remember that pc's are more intense per watt than vho's . so is it possible for mr. wrightme43 to have limited success with his clams under 384 wattsof pc lighting and mtpockets fail with 440 watts of vho?

Yes, I believe that light intensity is rapidly depleted by water depth, also having a huge effect is the clarity of the water, the age of the bulb, and if you have a cover glass or open top, and how clean you keep your light shield.
I use a open top, clean light shield weekly, and change my bulbs after 6 months. My maxxima is halfway up the tank. I have a deresa in a 150 with 6 96 watt pcs, on the very bottom of the tank. It was from my 44 gallon cornor hex with a 96 quad and 2 65 watt pcs. It has grown tremendously. This is only my opinion and my experince. I will not put another maxxima, or crocea, under pc light. Deresa I can recomend wholeheartedly. They, in my experince do wonderfully and color up better than some I have seen under MH. Or maybe as I have said before I am just the luckiest person on the planet and fish, corals, and clams just love me and want to be near me. LOL I have done some stupid stuff and had it work out for no other reason than I was just lucky. LOL Steve

Well said Sue! I concur.

i kept a maxima under PC lighting for about 6 months. during that time the color gradually faded out, fortunately now it is under a MH nad has gotten all its color back and is growing like crazy. i agree with others, no maxima or crocea.
