I ve recently added more water volume in way of a larger sump.does the general rule of 1 1/2 to 2 #'s of live rock pertain to tank size alone or total water volume throuout the entire system.

I believe that it just refers to the tank volume even though that is not the total amount of water you are filtering with you live rock. My guess is based on the fact that if you had a lot of water that was not in your display, and you added all of that rock to your main display, there would hardly be any water in the tank. Also if you plan to run a Berlin style sump then some of that live rock can go in there.

Goodluck.

The pounds-per-gallon pertains only to how much rock it takes to fill a tank up so that it appears full. It's basically for looks only. Rocks differ as well, and the more porous the rock is the more room it will take up. Porous rocks also add more nitrification and denitrification.
