Those of you with big tanks where do you buy your salt? Just a lot of those containers that make 150 gallon of saltwater? Or have you been able to secure some bulk source?

Generally speaking larger tanks don't require as frequent water changes as smaller ones because their capacity makes for a more stable environment so initially the cost may be higher but in terms of maintenance they actually (depending on the livestock and routine of the owner) may require less salt than a smaller system. Having said that I've always bought my salt in 5-7 gallon buckets...

I did say large tanks but I also meant (as in my case) several average sized tanks, in which the total volume certainly adds up.

I think people usually just look for the good deals on buckets of salt. I've seen people's houses/garages with 8-10 buckets of salt.

IIRC, drsfostersmith gets HUGE vats of Reef Crystals for their facilities. I just can't find the picture of it right now. You might call Instant Ocean/Reef Crystals to see if they offer a bigger type.

I go to pets-mart & get the buckets, cheapest around here, larger tanks new the ocean may go for the real thing.

Well I Go To Petco. I Have Been Using One Kind From The Begining .and Stick With It !!! But The Best Is Switching Between Instan Ocean And Oceanic...why Because Oceanic Has Better Calc And Instant Better Mag I Think>? Dont Remeber ???butt Try To Stick With One It Is A Man Made Ocean Remember!!more Addidtive The More Problems

I am lucky in the Sacramento area most LFS other than Petco sell IO 50 gallon bags for 9.99 everyday.

I checked into this a year or so ago and the truck freight was just to expensive to save any money. I generally just wait for a good sale or group buy and get a years supply. I also like the buckets and if I leave the lid loose I only have one chunky bucket instead of a full drum.

Don

get mine from dr. fostersmith I just paid for 6 buckets(160g) of the IO for 30.00/ea and shipping was a whopping ---- wait for it --------wait for it ----- $17.99 I also bought 2 eheims 1262 and 120lbs of sand all in the same order.....lol shipping was still 17.99 (total)

yea i did not same thing last year. bought 20 buckets of it. finally running short now. i guess that really is the best deal around.

fosters and smiths cant be beat. i buy 10 RC's at a time shipped to my door.
I agree with Donw. i inevitably toast a 1/2 bucket (if im lucky) out of every ten I buy. I wouldnt trust myself with a drum. I can shake my head over a 1/2 bucket or so..........a drum would kinda tick me off.......
