what is the difference between se and de is one better than they other what are the advantages of both?

going to get some but should i go with the minis or the large dont have that much space in the canopy so was just wondering if it would be better to get the minis becuase i could add fans and it would get better surculation to cool them down or are the larges that much better and dont put that much more heat out that i should get them

thanks all for the help

The difference in the mini and the large really has no effect on heat, the wattage of the bulb is going to determine how much heat you will have. I would say whichever fits better in the hood would be fine. What size tank are they going over? I have two mini's over a 90 gallon and it is plenty.
SE and DE I think are a personal preference. Are you going to run them off a ballast you already have? I prefer SE because the bulbs are usually cheaper when you need to replace them and you have more choices of brands and colors.
Lighting questions usually opens up a ton of opinions so I am sure you will get several of them. If it helps I know people that use SE and others the use DE, both seem to work just fine.

thanks they are going over my 155 gallon bowfront think i am going to go with 3 400watt mini relectors i dont know what the ballast are but i am getting them from nomercymike when ever he has time to get them out of his storge

so do i need to know what the ballast are the decided what bulb i need to get not color or brand but se or de still would like to know what the exsact difference is between them

You probably can do just as well with three 250W lamps & the Luminarc III Mini's, unless your tank is deeper than 24/25 inches you don't need to deal with all that extra heat & power consumption.

yea what they said LOL
250's will do good 400s are for DEEP tanks..
And the minis will do good as long as you don't put them right on top of the water

Yes. Less power used the better. It goes without saying that the more lighting the easier the placement, but the higher the power, thew more dollars spent, higher the lighting cost, higher cooling needs, etc. Many shoot the wad on the biggest they can't afford and later are shocked with the monthly costs. Go with the lowest power that meets your needs.

I ran 3 250w luminarc minis with reeflux 12Ks. Bright blue colors and couldn't keep the corals in the tank with all the growth.

Am getting good healthy growth with 2 175s now in my 72

you had the 3 250 over your 72

Not meaning to hijack the thread but Herefishyfishy what brand/type of ballast were you running your 3-250's with 12k Reeflux?

I like the icecap electronic ballast. Run cooler and lower electricity cost.

The difference between SE and DE is just what the name says. One has a single end like a screw in light bulb, and the other is double ended like the home lighting halide bulbs in floor lamps and work lights.

ooooo i get it that makes me feel dumd

ar rf12 se or de and what is the difference

The reeflux 12k's come in both SE and DE. Another bulb I have had good luck with is the coralvue (a little cheaper) which also comes in both styles. Both bulbs (reeflux - coralvue) are made by the same manufacture. The reeflux 12k's are too blue for me.
