ok this is what i understand about macros but i'm not an expert hehe.
macro picture means it's a extremely close up photo of something very very tini.
i'm not sure but i think people sometimes add lenses to their cameras so they can take a way way even closer picture, but i'm not sure about that dood.
ohh yeah and i forgot that sometimes people perfection those pictures in their computers by sharping the photo (kind of like giving it a way kewl look )
 
Basically it is refering to the extreme close up. It can be accomplished different ways. The macro mode on a camera refers to a mode where the camera can focus on objects much closer to the lense then in normal photography. A macro lense for a SLR camera can typically make the object focus in a range that will make the object appear at a 1to1 ratio on the acual sensor be it a digital sensor or film. So you can imagine how huge a acropora polyp would be if you layed it on the sensor that is about 25mm wide and makes a picture that it 8mp.
