I've recently noticed my Christmas Tree Favis is trying to spread out on the sand bed. I'd like to put it on top of square flat plugs so that it can naturally spread onto them. Anyone have any ideas what I can use and where I can get them?

There are numerous types of frag plugs you could set it on and them them grow out onto. Bulk Reef Supply has a lot of different types. This can give you some ideas. Fragging Supplies - Bulk Reef Supply
Some of our local stores will carry some of the same items. I know some people have made their own. Might try googling it. I'm sure there is a youtube video on doing it. Or break up a rock and set it on rubble rock. Some people have used tile, but not sure what kind can be used.
Maybe those that have used tile or have made their own will post more info for you.

Thanks IPisces! I went, I saw and I've ordered :) I'll set the Favia on top of say 3-4 of the large square ones that I bought. Hopefully it will spread nicely onto them and then I can pass them along to others :)

They will still require cutting with some kind of too. They are a stoney coral and have a skeleton. Its not real difficult with them though. You might invest in a fragging kit with a scalpel.

Believe it or not, LPS like Favia's and acans tend to grow faster when they have a solid surface to grow over. Like frag plugs or Live Rock. They still grow slow though, but faster than on the sand bed. :)

If left on the sandbed, dont they tend to grow under them selves instead of outward? I've had some acans do that.

Well so far mine is spreading out and not under. As soon as the plugs arrive I'm sure the growth will pick up :) Then I'll be giving the frags away :)

Favias are awesome. Keep me in mind when you get some frags going. :)
Also would like to see some pictures of how you laid out the plugs. Did you just do a circle all the way around the coral so it can spread every which way?
Also favia are lps, does that mean youll need a saw like you would a Duncan or what lorrie?
Keep us updated.

I'll be setting the Favia on top of the plugs. Allowing it to spread naturally amongst them. Prob 5-7 plugs in all. Then once the plugs show good cover, I'll take a dremmel to it, cutting around the mother colony. Sounds about right anyways. Not sure as this will be my first fragging-lol.

...... Waiting. :)

I think I'm going to start stocking up on lps's I've been looking at aqua ad and barrier reefs site and it's getting me antsy

Don't be holding your breath during the wait-lol. This has been the slowest growing coral I've ever owned.

3 years ago when I bought it.
