Does anyone here prepare or make food for your fishes. I just did it today. I bought like a pound of seafood mixture of shrimp, crab meat, squid, oyster, and kalamari. What I did is I blend the whole thing adding a little RO water and garlic extreme. I bought a few ice cube trays to freeze the food for later use. I fed it to my fishes and they love it. I was curious what other ways I can do to prepare my fish food? Oh yea....I bought the seafood mix a total of $2.31. Thought that was well spent.

Very cool Mo! I just open the formula 1,2 3,4,5,6...1,000 flake food or pellets and take out a pinch and Walla!:p(LOL) Never made any before man, but I know Paul (PaulB) does all kinds of stuff with food for his fish...Even bananas! I'm sure if he sees the thread, he will chime in. Feed sparingly man...You don't want any water quality issues;)

Thats the biggest problem, water quality. I do make food every day but mixing it in a blender gives you too much juice that disapates in the water with no benefit to the animals, I am sure filter feeders enjoy it though.
I have been feeding a lot of bananas, Selcon, avacado, garlic and Plaster of Paris.
No thats not a missprint. I use about equal parts of plaster to banana mixture. I wait until the plaster starts to set then mix it in. Don't get crazy on me, plaster is just calcium and a few other things that will not hurt them. Those vacation feeder blocks are made of plaster with some food mixed in.
Almost all of my fish love this including the moorish Idol and copperband butterfly.
Of course this is only for one meal, they also get frozen sponge (that I collect) and some of the commercially available foods mentioned. Also every day they get live baby brine (mostly for the blue stripe pipe fish and fire fish) and live black worms.
I am trying to get them to like linguini and clams so they can share my dinner.

The main things i've been told about proper feeding include mention of making fresh food mush for your fish. People will go buy a bunch of scallops, clams, shrimp, etc and blend it together...freeze it and then thaw and feed chunks as needed. You can buy basically the same thing from ocean nutrition and others. I think the main thing is to keep the diet of your fish varied. Feed them a variety of foods so they can get the nutition they need. I personally use a meety frozen mush, a algae/meety frozen mix, frozen mysis, and flake soaked in Selcon. The tang gets nori soaked in Selcon as well. But that's it, i feed every day or every other day and try to make sure i never overfeed. HTH

Zenn is correct about varing the diet and i would also like to add something. Many people do mix scalops, squid, fillets, clams etc but they omit the most important part of a fishes diet. Almost all fish eat other fish in the sea, but they eat the whole fish not just fillets, squid tentacles or clam mantles. You should feed (or mush) whole animals such as complete fish or squid. Most of the nutrients and vitamins come from fish viscera (guts) All of the vitamin A in a fish is in it's liver and all of the calcium is in it's bones, that is what a fish needs to stay healthy for many years. I buy tiny frozen salt water fish in an Asian market, you can also get spearing in a bait store. I use the entire fish.
As for people making their own food, it is very cheap, almost free.

Mo, squid is calamari

Have a great day, I am getting hungry, time to have a plaster burger.
Paul:eek:

I didn't know squid was calamari. I don't eat seafood. Thanks for all the ideas. I think I'm just going to feed these blended food like once a week. Hate to have bad water quality. Most times I feed formula 2, mysis and brine shrimp.

Mo, I eat it every week, my family was in the sea food business. Calamari is squid in Italian. We don't really hardly ever eat meat.
I think I will order some tonight. Have a great day.
Paul
