I have a fish in a reef tank that is showing a need for a treatment of Maracyn 2 but I may get away with plain Maracyn1.

I cannot remove the fish and the only invert life in the tank other than fish are BTA anemone.

Can I get away with this treatment?

DO NOT even think about adding Maracyn 1 to a reef tank or FOT. You * may get away with Maracyn 2 and it is a much better drug.

The issue in any running reef/ FOT etc., tank is how effective will it be. All carbon / GAC MUST be taken out. Shut down the skimmer and ozone if you have them. You need to monitor Ammonia daily and have stand by new water and a bottle of Amqeul just in case.

Why is Maracyn 1 a problem? I thought it was fairly common that folks used it to kill cyno(and I know that's not a proper solution).

At fish dosages it will take out the nitrifiying bacteria. The Cyano dosage is much, much lower.

I guess the real question is why can't you remove the fish? It may not be easy... you may have to spend hours doing it - but it's waaaaaay better than medicating your reef.

The real question is whats the symtoms you have?
Breathing hard or surface breathing?
Slow movement or poor color?
Black spots or fungas?
Popeye?
