Hi
i have a fish with a little parasite problem. found some medication that says it is all natural made from the tea tree extract. says it is completely reef safe. but will it hurt my pods????? they are really getting abundant, would not want to have to start over?? its called MelaFix
anyone??
thanks

Although I have not heard of Melafix killing off Pods I have not heard that it kills parasites either. Who recommended Melafix for parasites? What sort of parasite do your fish have? What are the symptoms? Do you quarantine before adding a new fish?

the lfs sold it to me. we were looking for something to treat my clown goby with that would not hurt the reef. it appears that he has some white spots, they seem to start off under the skin, and work their way out. they look like little spikes when they are outside the skin. i do usually quarantine, i have not added new fish for a month. my quarantine tank is now occupied with female mandarin and pods. anyway, my blue tang seemed to have ich right after christmas, it was a very stressful night for them, 14 year old boy and grand kids getting really rowdy with new toys right by tank, anyway, the next day bt had some white spots on her and was rubbing on the rock now and then. then i remembered garlic may help. the goby does look better after 3xs food soaked in a tad of garlic. and my tang is almost clear. what else can you treat with? or do you just let nature take its course and hope for the best. melefix reads that it is for healing wounds. (read it after i brought it home, what i get for trusting lfs owner, right?) so i will keep it on hand. what do you thin this could be? i tried taking a pic, but with his color it is really hard to see anyway, no way can i get anything clear enough.

I have used Melafix a couple of times. It seems to work pretty well in a quarintine tank. I tried it recently in my display tank because I thought it might be easier to treat the whole tank than try to catch the sick fish for quaratine. It didn't get rid of the parasites and I ended up loosing one of my fish before I was able to get them out of the tank to quarintine. It didn't seem to harm any of my inverts, some of my mushrooms had a tough time while it was in there but came through fine after a few days and clean water.

You might have different results if your tank is smaller depending on your filter system. You have to remove your carbon and turn off your skimmer for melafix to have any effect. The easiest way though, is to treat your fish in a 10gal quarintine tank, the hard part is catching the fish.

ya, i tried to catch the little bugger, but he is so small and so many holes to hide in, i am hoping the garlic will work, blue tang completely clear today and he looks better!!
my qt tank is a 5 gallon and its kinda occupied with a mandarin. hmmm
seems there is always a need to set up yet another tank somewhere!!! =)

Melafix if actually good your fish but it will not kill anything. What it does is help the fish build up it's slime coat so it can defend against parasites and other bacteria. Kind of like a second skin. If you are having a rough time with ich in your system, I would recommend using seachem's neoplex. I have used it on a few reefs and haven't seen any ill effects from it. Neoplex won't kill the bugs either but it breaks the life cycle of the parasite making is sterile.

I F You Have Fish With Ich Or Other Parasites I Would Suggest Cleaner Shrimp Over Any Chemicals Added To Tank And Most Fish Loved To Be Cleaned By Them Or Even Cleaner Wrass Work Well.

MelaFix

awesome, thanks everyone!! i got some ruby reef ich kick on the way. the tang still has a stray spot here and there and i have learned they are a little prone to these things. my goby is fine. i don't know what he went through, it did not look like ich to me, but since he is kinda see through in parts it may be why it looked weird.i have also ordered a cleaner shrimp. had to wait for this weather to break to let them ship (29 below with 40 below wind chills.............brrrrrrrrrrrr. next week looks like it is breaking so we will be getting our new fishes, an orange linka, a cleaner shrimp and a sally lightfoot crab. should be interesting additions!!
thanks for all the help everyone, this is the friendliest forum on the web!!
