hi everyone ..

I have some problems with mg measurement
I use TROPIC MARINE PRO REEF salt with 1.025 SG ( refractometer )
I measure new salt water before the water change 1430 mg ( salifert )

can someone confirm this measurement ?

I would venture to guess that your Salifert test kit is not measuring the mg correctly. I stopped using Salifert after I found out that both their CA and KH tests kits were inaccurate. I would suggest switching to Elos test kits. Much more accurate. I just got an Elos MG test kit from Barrier Reef Aquarium the other day and I love it. Easy to use and accurate.

Is there a reason you think the measurement is off?

Test kits are one of my biggest pet peeves. Before Elos hit the market everyone swore by salifert which has always had accuracy issues. Now that Elos kits give a different measurement the tables have turned with same accuracy issues. When you see a reading that is possibly way out of wack find something else to test. IO is a good product to use for testing test kits, its been consistant for many years.

thanks DonW

I am suspecting the refractometer also ..

it is 4 years old and I calibrating with ro water:confused: ..

i have big problem keeping sps ..

i heard which could be hear say, the ppl who makes the salifert slaps them together quick like, so accuracy of them could be off! i use elos & api, which works for me. ive asked my lfs what they perfer and there was mixed reviews one lfs didnt recommend api but salifert then the other lfs recommended api and didnt salifert. honestly its what does it for you!
good luck with your mg!

it is strange ..

same water
two salifert tests
one measure 1200
the other 1500:eek:

I will get ELOS

TROPIC MARINE PRO REEF reads about 1380 usually or there abouts. IO wil be around 1070 or so.

Well, then it will be off more than likely as you CAN NOT accurately calibrate a refract with RO. A $ 300 lab grade one will always read 1.5 ppt to low, as it is suppose to, as table salt is not the same as seawater and they are usual calibrated with table salt, as are the numbers in the refract window set to table salt. So, the numbers are off in the window for seawater and CAN NOT be fixed but you can get it to read fairly accurate from say 31 - 38 ppt. However, these cheap Chinese ones can be almost anywhere from right on to being off 4 ppt. You should get some PinPoint 53 mS solution and then calibrate the refract so it reads 35 ppt or 1.0264.

Don

I find what you said as so true :)
