Minimum clam size without supplemental feeds

I have been considering getting a clam. I already feed a a large amount of phyto 1.5 oz on 75 gal (DT's reef blend 20-50 micron) and cyclopeze (40-100 micron I think) If I get a 2-3" clam should I still bowl feed it or just kick up the amount of phtyo I put in the tank temporarily. The ones for sale around here are usually about 2.5" It just seems like taking the clam out everyday would be stressful? Maybe just target feed the clam and let the other corals have the rest. DT's farm is near me here in Illinois so its not that expensive. Is bowl feeding to prevent the tank from getting too much organics or to cut down on the expense needed to create enought concentration in the water?

Also if the clam is 3"+ is the phtyo feeding still beneficial? or do they just sort of switch over to primarily light for food? I am assuming they still filter, but can fall back on photosythesis.
