Where do zoas go. Last week I moved a small frag with about 5-7 zoa polyps from the bottom of my tank to a higher level, now they are missing. Any ideas?

Where do zoas go.

To zoa heaven. Everytime a bell rings a zoa... never mind I forget where I was going with that.

Do you have any hungry fish, crabs, etc.? Did the whole rock fall behind others?

I have remove almost every hermit crab to my sump before this was placed. It was on the bottom of my tank for months and I decided to move it to a place higher in the tank. The rock is still inplace. Just the polyps are missing.

I don't know if they do or not. But I do know I have had better success with my zoa after removing my hermits.

does hermit crabs eat zoa's????

The little ones don't seem to. I have little blue and zebra legs, they seem to be fine with my zoas. I was suggesting a hitch-hiker or another larger type.

I know this is obvious but, are you sure they just aren't closed up?

As it looks either they were eaten or they have moved. There is no sign of them at all. No little gray bump like you see when they are closed.

my guess is that you moved them to a spot very near the hide out of a hitchicking rock crab of some sort and there for at night when he strays from his hide out they are close and an easy meal!

Use a flash light at night in that same area and see if you see any thing...

sometimes a fish will knock a newly placed frag down for whatever reason(intrusion?) look all around thd tank bottom and the rockwork.

are you sure it's a crab dood?

i know sometimes zoos melt if theyre exposed to a lot of light....just a thought :p.

I was going to say the same thing. In my experience every time I have moved mine up they have "melted" for lack of a better term in about 48-72 hours. Some will peel of the rock and fall but most melt. I've heard this from other people with intense lighting as well. Zoo's just don't deal with light intensity changes well. It's the main reason I don't have more. I had a rock with over 500 polyps with other 10 different colors. It was my best coral. Had it for almost 2 years. I moved it up like 3 inches and 2 inches to the right and voila, 2 days later all were gone except a few laying on the bottom!?!? I've had this happen with shrooms as well, but no other species.

It could be the light. Have a 46 bowed tank. I run a 175w mh 14000k and a 96w actnic. I moved them from the bottom 23 inches from the light to about 18 inches. The crab has a home about 4 inches from where the zoas were place. The rock chip they were on is still where it was glued.
