one of my monti digita's is bleaching...it is almost completely white after only a few days...my others seem ok..they are in a qt tank right now under a 96w pc..the water is very clean..i haven't tested it, but there aren't any fish and i have been doing alot of water changes on it...any help??????????????/

Test for calcium, alkalinity and SPG. Make sure there is plenty of flow. I'm not sure water changes will have any positive effect unless the salt mix you're using has the correct amount of the above or you have a nitrate problem.

Kevin

hmm Kevin is the expert .
I wish i could help you dood.... one thing i think might be affecting is your light??
Ok i better just shut up because i seriously don't know but i wish you good luck dood :(

thanks Kevin..i don't have any test kits for calcium....i use IO salt, so the levels should be up to par..i am going to move it into my display...the water and lighting should be better

Typically, when I mix up my IO... Calcium & Magnesium levels are rather low. Calcium tends to be down to about 350's... with Mag at about 1100, and I need to buffer both of those up before doing my water changes.

i will look into getting a calcium test kit then...any suggestions on brand??? salifert??

Personally, I've had the best luck with the Salifert kits. Easiest to read, close enough accuracy to be useful. Consistant.

You will want to test your Alk along with your Calcium. Mag is probably the LAST test kit that I bothered purchasing. Yes, Mag is important, but not as important as monitoring Alk & Calcium... so if you are having other things this time of year that $$$ really needs to go for... just worry about Alk & Cal for now.

i'll probably have to order a kit..the lfs' around here sell really cheap kits

Is it fading all over or is it starting to turn white in patches? If the latter it may be infected with montipora eating nudibranchs. These are very tiny and hard to see, but if it is a possibility, don't put it in your display tank!

it started as a small patch..it is one big area now...i wish i had read this sooner.....i already added it to my display!!!!

Less likely nudis though possible. Most likely scenario is a light caused fade. Montis will often fade with lighting changes. It probably came from a MH tank and is now under florescent. Try moving it closer to your light and into good water flow.

it is very white in places and looks dead..the entire top half is still orange though...is there hope for it???

Bleaching from the bottom up typically means insufficient light. Monti is pretty tough, might just surprise you and fully color back up with good lighting and a close match to it's previous water parameters. Out of curiosity, what is your salinity?

Remember, changes tend to happen very slowly in SPS's... so don't expect to see much of a change for a couple weeks, even in your main display tank. As long as you notice this "white" stops spreading, then you're on the right track.

i had thought about it before..i may just do that.....i will leave both pieces in the tank just to see if the whitening piece will come back

Id frag it all the way down to live flesh. Hang it from a piece of fishing line in the display and let both ends heal and cover with flesh. Then glue it down to a nice clean piece of LR on its side. Wont be long it will start branching. They can get some really funk growth if they have to much flow. I think I have the ugliest digis around, caused by flow.:)
