Monti Eating Nudi

i just decided to look in my tank after the lights went out...i noticed my purple monti cap had dead edges on it earlir today, so i was looking at it and found a white nudi....i pulled it off with tweezers and i am dipping it for an hour or two..i pulled my other monti caps up and checked them for other predators..i didn't see any...this is the only one i have ever seen...i hope this was the only one, but i know that is wishful thinking....this was my first sps coral..i got it with 2 others in one order..they are the only ones that i didn't dip!!!!

I am fighting this myself, my large monti is almost half gone.

What are you using as a dip? If it is lugols what strength is the solution (drops/gal)?

I did a lugols dip but it seemed to have no effect. I left the monti in the dip for about an half and hour and then picked off all the visible nudis but within days they were back in force.

i used Interceptor as a dip..it lasted for about 1-1/2 hrs...i'm not even sure if that is what to kill them with, but it can't hurt

OMG, Ron, I really hate to hear that. The nudi's would probably of been in an egg sack and hatched. If there is 1 I doubt it's the only one. I don't know if interceptor will kill them. I do know iodine works. I did have to fight them back before this present tank was running. They are a major pain. Keep checking as if there is one I am willing to bet there are more.

SueT you said iodine works. Do you know what strength I should make the dip and how long I should leave the monti in? I think I used 15 drops/gal the other day for 1/2 an hour and it did not seem to help, I still was picking live nudis off an hour later.

If not SueT, could anybody help me make the dip more effective? I need to dip it again today or else I am afraid it will be gone in a matter of days.

I remember reading once that they can be taken care of with Tetra's "GoldOomed." It's some sort of medicine they don't sell in the US any more, but it still shows its head from time to time. I saw three bottles on eBay about a year ago, so I bought them in case there was any truth to the claims.

I'll also tag along. Does anyone know anything about this medicine? It's intended for some sort of fresh water use is all I know. Searching the Web doesn't produce much success.

Iodine doesnt really kill them unless you use a really potent mix of it for a long time.

I have heard that that product Sherman just metnioned does do a good job on them.

Ive been through the wringer with most all of the pests including the worst of them being aefw's...lost 1/2 of my stonies to them.

Anyways, i got my first monti eating nudis a coupel of weeks ago......i dipped with tmpcc for 25 minutes before thrwing any fo the frags in the tank. 2 days later i saw 2 nudis, and closer inspection showed a few juvis and abunch of eggs. I cut the bottom 1/3 of the coral off and tossed it. Im hoping it wasnt in my tank long enough to spread anywhere. *crossing fingers*

I had the nudies for a year or so, but they are definately gone now. It took an extended campaign to kill the little buggers.

My technique was crude, but it worked in the long run.

I took an asperator, and sprayed the under side of all monties and adjacent rocks fiercly.

I did this regularly (1 a day?) -More in the very begining-

All the nudies would blow away, and eventually they died off.

Not a great method, but it worked. Good Luck!

Crude is good as long as it works.

I am a hack it off kind of guy.......how i beat the AEFW's is i hacked the tops off of all my acros and treated and quarantined them for 6 or 7 weeks in anoither system. It sucked and was really disappointing to reduce everything to frags......but success is success when getting rid of stuff like this

fly guy's pics are a perfect shot of them %$#^&*'s. I always said they looked like a mop. As for my iodine mix, it was just enough to make them float off the coral but not enough to burn it. I was also trying to kill them but not the coral. I made it as strong as I could.

Ron, those are the bad ones. Not that I guess there are any good ones. It is a fight to kill them all.

well i ended up breaking alot of the cap off..alot of the edges were dead anyway..i examined it and i didn't see any more, or eggs, but i am going to dip it in an iodine mix anyway...Sue, what mixture did you use???

Ron, I didn't use any specific mixture. I just kept adding drops of Lugols til they dropped off. It was just this side of bleaching the monti and enough to kill them. Not scientific at all, but it worked for me. It will have to be done til all egg sacks have hatched or you scrub them off.

Marty Finn had poorish luck with Lugols. Said that his montis that didn't die from it, browned out. I had good luck with interceptor dip and manual picking whenever apparent. After a major attack, none seen for months.
(keep in mind I used the word "luck" as no scientific proof)

well i already did the Interceptor dip.....i haven't seen anymore, but i went ahead and broke alot of it off..it bleached out a bit, but it is still alive(i think)

I rinsed my monti with fresh water. I came to the point either save them or there going to slowly die anyway. The fresh water did work the corals looked bad for some time then came back.
somebody told me lime green wrasse eat them but????
