I just got together all of the pieces for my tank and I am ready to order the rock for my 110 tall. Today I was talking to my landlord and he said that he was going to sell the house that I live in after my lease is up. Unfortunatly that is in three months at the end of december. I have been putting this system together since last October and I am dying to get it up and running. I have already done the wet run test and all I have to do is get the rock and cure it. Do you guys think I should go ahead and set it up, then in three months take it down?? If I do this I will imediatly set the tank up at the new residence. But am I going to have problems? Will the tank have to re-cycle? And if I do set it up then break it down are there any helpful hints you guys have for transporting live rock and possibly fish? I have waited so long to set up this tank and now im kinda pissed at my landlord, not because I have to move, but because it might delay my fish tank.

It is a real pita to move a tank. Have to keep stuff in water, warm and aerated. Hauling all the water, rocks, setting back up, all the containers, reaquascaping. If it was me, I would wait. I know it sounds like forever, but think the day you were moving everything you would be saying, I should of waited. It is a lot easier moving a nice empty tank. Just think about moving 110 gallons of water. The only way I would consider doing it is if I had access to the place I was moving to early. A couple of dedicated days just to get the tank moved. I would wait and do it after the move. Moving isn't a reallt easy thing to do anyway, you'll probably be busy enough with just that.

Have I convinced you yet.

PS. I did move my 75 gallon, and it took quite a bit of neglect during the move, too much going on.

I'd definitely wait..... I had the same dilema. I bought a 110 gallon system about 6 months ago and almost set it up. About 3 months ago we decided to buy a house. I'm so glad I did not set it up....

Buy your rock now, and let it cycle in garbage cans or rubbermaid bins so when you move in a few months your rock is completely cleaned and cycled and you set your tank up and you are ready with no waiting on the rock!

We are pros at rocks in cans, had ours in garbage cans for a year while changing ideas on the tank and such.

Moving a tank is a whole complete day affair. I mean up early, bed late, and STRESSFULL!!!!!!!!! I have had to do it for one customer. I was stressed to the max, and I had 2 helpers. Here is another thing, If something breaks or cracks in the move, its easy to fix while its dry and no livestock is waiting. Also you can set it up in the new place and make sure you happy with it where it is at.
Hope this helps. Steve

I also vote to wait. But if you just can't do it, I suggest setting up a small tank. Get a cheap 10 gallon tank with a heater and an HOB filter. Buy a few pounds of live rock from your LFS or someone in the local reef club. Use your test kits to check water quality. Add a few hardy corals and watch the life develop in your tank.

When you move and set up your big tank, you will have a headstart and a quarantine tank to boot.

If that doesn't do it, see if your landlord will let you out of the lease early. He may want to sell as soon as possible and will let you out if you don't mind moving sooner.

Live rock does not take 3 months to cycle I would wait I started to settup a 125 for my son knowing it was temporary he now has almolst everything he needs but has decided he does not want to mess with now as he needs a car soon he plans on getting into it later but when ? so I have to tear it down and get rid of a few things which is a pain.
