I have an about 2 1/2 inch mussel growing in my sump. Black, but pearly black. Haven't had a chance to do any research yet, I'm just looking for quick opinions about whether I should concern myself at all with it. Its likely been there a while to get to that size as iI didn't notice it on the rock when iI got it. I can try to get a picture when flow is off again, but when I tried earlier, all I got was reflection from the light.
my assumption would be harmless filter feeder, but if someone knows more, i'd appreciate hearing.

***mussel it must have auto corrected, and I can't figure out how to edit the title

Seems the research says neither good nor bad, but usually not long lived. Anyone disagree?

Yes, 100% filter feeder and don't need light. If its growing larger its a sign of a healthy reef with plenty of plankton for it to feed on and grow. I have a few hitch hiker muscles that have been on the LR for about eight years.

yeah, the only thing thats worrying me now is that plankton is probably due to the fact that I overfeed, which I do, and know I do... and that's likely why my trates run higher than I'd like. Everything seems happy despite that though, so I'm just making sure they aren't rising, rather than than fighting them... for now at least....

When I moved the sump over yesterday, I was able to get some pictures. Since I think its kind of cool, it seemed worth digging this up to share them.
