My 165 gal

I'm upgrading from a 55 gal. to a 165 gal..I was going to run over flow box..But a few people told me to drill the glass..Here is the tank dimensions are (72x18x22)..This is all new to me..Any place I can take my tank to get the holes drilled and how many holes and size of the holes?Was thinking of using my old 55gal tank for a sub..Any help would be most appreciated!

With a tank that size I would either drill the tank or get one with prebuilt overflows. How many and where depends on what you want to keep. Softies would be okay with overflows in both corners. Hard corals would benefit from a closed loop system. What's are your plans for inhabitants?

I was mostly planning on going with polyps and softies!

So a couple of overflows and returns should do the trick. Do you already have the tank? If not I would buy a tank with overflows built in.

All ready have the tank..Its sitting in my garage...I have my 55 gal. running right now..I have Sailfin Tang,yellow watchman goby,scooter bleeny,Coral Beauty,blue Devil Damsel,Few mushrooms and some polyp.I have 67 lbs. live rock,Planning on getting more.Just notsure how to transfer all that into the 165...Do to where the 55 sits is where the 165 is going..Today just got myself a CPR Bak-Pak Dual pak Skimmer..Notsure if the skimmer was the right one to get

Hi Chris

Once you set up your new tank, you will be in the big boy league, and the backpack just aint really the right skimmer for that type of application. You should start having a look at some of the beckett, or needle wheel (euroreef) models. Those have superior skimming capability compared to the cpr backpack, even if it is the dual version. According to your dimensions is a 125 gallon, just thought you might want to know that.

Hi Chris,

I hate to break it to you but that is a 135 not a 165

I have a 150 that is the same tank only 28" tall. I put two 3" holes (for 2" bulkheads) in the top back corner and then built overflow boxes out of black acrylic. I also added a 2" wide trough along the whole back of the tank that drains into the overflows. For more info on what I did look at

I've been running this system now for over a year and I'm very happy with it. The only thing I would do differently is I would make the trough 1" wide by 2" tall instead so it doesn't block out quite so much light.
