Hehehe....thought I'd start a thread on what is interesting in my backyard. Lately, it is the invasion of the 17 year cicadas. Here are a few pics for ya:

The first is of a tree in my back that is covered in these guys. The braches on most smaller trees are weighted down. The bigger trees just have their trunks covered. The birds are having a wonderful time eating them....

This one is a close-up of the cute little guy. My daughter screams her head off in fear at them flying around...

And this one shows its size. I probably have an average sized female hand.

I'll have to post some newer pics but this is a picture of some of my bonsai last fall. What does everyone else have in their back yard?

Chris, I'm pretty sure they only last a few weeks. You should be in the clear by september. If not, I'll send ya out some protective gear.

"Bugs Bad"...LOL! There is nothing to fear......

Although, it is quite gross when you look out the window and see these bugs flying like crazy. If you knock into the tree they come swarming out. I was holding one in my hand trying to show my daughter (2 1/2 yr old), and it flew out of my hand and landed on her.....Holy Cow - the scream! I don't think she'll be an entomologist.

Let's see what's interesting in your back yard!

Since I moved out to the Seattle last year I am glad I missed this invasion. :) I have lived through enough of those these invasions to last a lifetime.

I live in an apartment now  I do miss all my flowers and the pear tree in the backyard but I have to tell you, I don't miss mowing the grass. ;)

Man, I am SO bummed that I'm missing the cicadas. I lived in D.C. in 1987 and man they were cool. You're lucky Nikki!!! The rest of you are wusses :D.

Here's a project the kids and I started this Spring. It's a work in progress, but it gives you an idea...

Paul, I recognize those whiskey drums from Home Depot. I spent an hour trying to figure out how I could use one at my house. I just had to buy one but couldn't come up with a reasonable use. Now I have a reason to buy two!

Shaun, yeah, it's a great use for them. The best part is that you don't have to remember to water the plants :D.

I was in DC last week for the big invasion .... THOUSANDS of them everywhere. It was certainly an eerie experience to see all of them and to hear them in the background howling like a constant weather alert alarm.

All the cicadas are keeping the birds, lizards, and snakes well fed. Here is a skink that was getting some sun. I tried to catch him, so my daughter could see it, but he was too fast for me and ducked in his hole. I also tried to catch a snake on the same day, but she got under the deck right as I was grabbing her tail.

Being born just outside of Death Valley I have had enough bug life to last me a life time, so no thnks on any of that stuff.

Chris I think you have a mole problem brother.

Well, since winter is almost over....I thought I'd post some pics of one of the snows we had this season:
