Jeff, you could just like drill some holes into it (It looks like plastic from the pics) and just get flow like that.

you could do that, but it would risk cracking the plastic, and you'd still need a lot of holes to allow the same amount of flow through as simply lifting up the frags. also, eggcrate is lightweight (much more than say, substrate) and reduces the weight against the suction cups.

just offering suggestions :) i don't even know if it does reduce flow. he could have so much flow in his tank that inside the tray may have some interesting swirling flow patterns from bouncing off the inside walls.

Not a stupid question at all. I built mine because I wanted to see if I could get my frags up high so they would grow faster, and so that they will be in a safe place where I can see them easily. Here are the pics you asked for Cesar. I just think it is cool. LOL.

Opihi is right. It does inhibit flow... unless you are directing a small pump to it. Or it can work for you too specially if you want a slow flow area for freshly attached soft corals... But in case of SPS, it is a no go. So I ended up puting back the SPS to the bottom...

Maybe I can dremel the front wall . Hey, BTW, the floor part of this shelf has holes on it but not that much...

I really like the eggcrate idea. But the problem I am having is that nuissance algae takes over it after awhile. Specially those hard to reach in-betweens.... even snails cannot reach them... It looks good while it is new or freshly cleaned bit other than that, it is a no go...

Thanks for the Heads up Cesar, I guess when it starts to take over I will swap out the shelving. I have a bunch of the egg crate. I guess that will work. Never really know till you try. LOL. Steve

thanks for clarifying. I have another question now (maybe should be a new thread but oh well) I see you are using pc's I've been told that sps's can't survive under anything but MH have you had any problems running them under pc's?

Cesar,
You could create a mini-shelf by gluing pieces of eggcrate on top of segments of large ID PVC. (or 1.5" maybe even 2" coupling?) then you can place your frags on top of the eggcrate shelf.

and when they get too dirty, you can dip them in a vinegar or bleach solution for a while. done deal :)

don't give up on it man! it really looks sweet :)

Dasaphrota, I have as of yet had no problem keeping sps alive and growing under p.c. light. I have a large turqouise acropora that is growing wonderfully, A piece of green acro that started as a tiny nub that is now 3 inchs high and has side branches all over it. I have a hydonophora that has done great for me so far, I have a bali slimer that started at 3 inchs and now is over 5 and has grown one good side branch and looks to be growing more. I have BT anemone that are now in a customers tank grown in pc light for 3 years now. I will say that the color on sps under mh is more brillant. However I have seen many tanks with metal halide that the person growing the coral could not keep it alive for anything. Now I do have a differnt P.C. light than most of the ones you see. It has 4x 96 watt vs the normal one that has 4x65 watt. I am of the opinion (my Opinion LOL) that the corals if given proper water conditions and cared for they want to live and will. I am watching my coral that I bought and fraged, as a brown ugly acro turn dark green, and am hoping for the little purple tips I saw when I held it close under a 20k MH bulb at the LFS. It is doing this under pc light. I am going to buy a 2x 250 wt mh with 2x 110 wt vho light system. Just because I want it. I grew sps corals in a 10 gal under 1x96 wt with a emperor 280 filter, and a prizam skimmer, with live rock and live sand. And that evil calupera racemosa. LOL. Just so you know I am very hard headed, and want to try to do thing people say you cant do, just to do it. LOL. I am getting better though. Hth in some way. Steve

Here are some images of my frag tray.

Hey I like that, I will modify my next one to have that rim all the way to keep the snails and urchin from knocking off my frags. Mine is still doing ok, but not really getting the color I had hoped for. Never know till you try. LOL Steve

Thanks Steve. Snails still seem to get into my frag tray and I can even find hermits hanging out up there too. One thing the rim does help with is making sure the frag's don't fall off the tray:)
