My New Mini DIY Mazzei Protein Skimmer

I just want to share my new DIY Mazzei Protein Skimmer. Some parts are pre-cut (because i dont have the right tools=) but i assembled everything. The box is cut by ("ME") using mitter saw with 80 tooth carbride saw. Total height is approximately 25" tall and using a 6 OD" for the first riser and collection cup and 4 OD" for the second riser. I'm using a 684 Mazzei injector powered by a MAG9 pump. Let me know what you think of it...also check my GALLERY for the other pictures. I welcome any question or comments.....

When in the photo gallery, bring up the photo you want. When you see the larger photo displayed, right click on it and choose properties. The URL to that larger photo will be in the dialog box that pops up. Copy that URL and use it in the IMG tags in your post.

I will tell you what I think about that, it is awesome!!! Great work, I hope that it works good for ya. The nice thing about thos mazzi's is they don't need a monster pump to get good bubbles for those who don't know.

Big T, thanks for the compliments. And yes the Mazzei Injectors use smaller pump which cut down alot of electricty and pumps is also cheaper. Unlike beckett injector, they require a bigger pump which means more electricty and more expensive pump. The skimmer is runing smooth and no drawback at the momment. Its now running in my tank and taking alot of waste foam.

Erick, About the new tank well i postponed it. I didnt have enough space in my living room. So, right now i still have my 120 gallon Reef Tank.

M-Man, i figure it out....thanks. Here's a picture of the skimmer being tested in my garage. I did water change in my tank and save the dirty water and use it for the test run. Here's how it looks like after few hours....it produces nice dry dirty foam. Enough to make you gag =).

I did change few things with the skimmer. I'm now using a 1 inch Mazzei nozzle instead of the 3/4 inch mazzei injector. Boy, that nozzle rocks and skims like crazy. The only catch with the bigger nozzle is the'yre a little spendy and you need a bigger pump. I also abondoned the CVC connection (lifereef model). I found out the CVC or constant venturi clensing is actually sucking the dirty foam back into the injector and cloggs the venturi suction outlet (not good). I also made some modifications on the venturi suction, i installed a silencer fittings to reduce/eliminate the suction noise "Jet Noise" coming from the injector. About the price, the mazzei is prettttty spendy. The injector alone is $65.00 plus shipping. I didnt get to add all the cost of the materials but im guesing arround $150+ not including my precious time . I will post some updated pictures sometime this week or next week.

There's few difference between the two set-up.

In-sump usually do not require pluming(s). You just drop your skimmer into your existing sump and not to worry about anything but to plug and run the skimmer. Its also the best method if you dont have a space on your crowded cabinet.

Beside sump/away from sump set-up are for those who dont have a space to install a skimmer or the skimmer itself is bigger than the actual tank cabinet. This set-up may also require, cutting, plumbing, drilling etc.

Big-T, thanks for the compliment. Right now the skimmer still running smoothly. It looks like i got almost all the gunk out on my system in just few weeks. I might not even do a water change for few months from now on=). I also recently lower the foam production so i dont overskim my tank . I'll keep you posted.
