Sigh, I'm beginning to think that no one out in the Puget Sound area has a Nano Reef. I tell ya, I go to the LFS and all their stuff is literally tooooo darn BIG for my tank!

I've got a 6 gallon eclipse with 69 Watts of lighting and a skimmer.

So, my idea of a "frag" is around the size of my pinky. Everyone else's idea of a "frag" is around the size of my fist!! Well my "fist" literally barely fits into my tank! How the heck am I suppose to stock my tank when all the stores have these humungo jumbo items

I was just wondering If I'm the only one with this issue? The LFS guys just laugh at me when I see their new shipment of beautiful HUGE frags and say, "uh, do you have anything smaller?" Can you "chizel" off half that rock of polyps? Yea, that's it, I only want half the rock... :)

Oh, and "can you give me the smallest snails in the tank? Yes, the smallest ones.. nope, that one's too large"

Seriously, other that that minor problem, having a nano is really wonderful. How many of you can brag about only having to use a 1 gallon milk jug for a water change?? huh??? :D

Hehehe, makes for an easy water change day!

I loved my nano tank, though it was a tad bigger than yours at 17 gallons. I need to set it back up.

Maybe you can start swapping frags with others in your area. Other reefers would probably be estatic to receive your "overgrown frags" for a little one from their tanks. ;)

Welcome to Reef Frontiers, achu!

I was just thinking that. But, I need to find someone who also has a nano. My stuff is considered "overgrown" when it barely reaches the "1 frag" size for normal sized tank people.

That's actually a great idea. That way, if someone else around me has a nano and either of us really wants to buy something from the LFS, we can literally "split" it!

Hmmm... Now, which discussion group should I post a "classified nano reef buddy wanted" ad....

:)

Achu,

Until recently I was running two 10 gallon and a 20 gallon long glass nanos. The 10's each ran 96 watts of PC lighting and I put a 225 watt VHO setup on the 20 long (my first time using VHO, and boy was I impressed. The VHO bulbs REALLY seem to make the corals fluoresce unlike anything I saw under PC's. Admittedly, it took me a few days to get use to the "pinkish" haze.). I only ran a skimmer on the 20 long, and just relied on the water changes to keep the two 10’s in shape.

As far as the frag problem goes (finding stuff that will fit into them). Try showing up to LFS’s right after they receive a shipment, as sometimes they have broken pieces, etc.

In addition to that, Blue Sierra usually has some small misc. ‘shroom and zoo frags floating around the bottom of their VHO coral tanks (I have also seen some at Saltwater City and Aquarium Concepts, but Blue Sierra usually has the most.). The staff always seemed more then happy too fish some out for me and charge a small amount for each little piece. Over two years of collecting this has resulted in about 30-50 different varieties/colors/patterns of ‘shrooms and quite a few different types of zoo’s as well. The best part is, these all seem to split and mutate in a short period of time, so you can end up with a really “full” tank in very little time (You can also “help” them along by cutting up bigger ‘shrooms and putting them in a yogurt container with some rubble. The little pieces will eventually attach (2-3 weeks) and you can then glue those down to your live rock. For the zoo’s, you can use an exacto to split small chunks of them up and then glue the smaller sections to various live rock.)

If you are more interested in hard corals, I found Montipora Digitata, Montipora Capricornis, Stylophora, and Pocillopora all seemed too grown under my lighting conditions. You will have to feed these as well as add additional chemicals to get the calcium up (and keep it there) but you can have a really gorgeous display in no time (You can usually find 1-2.5” frags of all of these at most of the LFS’s, from what I have seen, Aquarium Concepts and Blue Sierra both usually have a good selection of these.).

I have had a Pocillopora colony for about 2.5 years now, it originally started out under 32 watt PC’s (While I had it at the top of a 20 gallon high, its growth was slow, so I added a second, and then a third 32watt PC retro fit kit to it.) It has managed to go through a “boiling” (heater incident), a “freezing” (several power failures), and a “dry spell” (leaky tank). Unfortunately, once it was added to my 90 gallon, it was immediately stung by my anemone. After much swearing and pruning of dead skeleton, I am down to a 2-3” section that managed to survive (it has since been moved). If you are really interested in doing an SPS nano, I would suggest starting out with a small piece of this, as atleast my piece seems to be VERY hardy.

I would also suggest talking with people in the club about bringing some small frags to the club meetings. This is probably the easiest way to get xenia, leathers, small candy cane frags, and small frogspawn/torch/hammer frags. Lots of people have leathers and xenia that has to be “trimmed” on a routine basis. A lot of people just dump this down the drain or throw it in the trash, so maybe you can talk them into saving a bit for you. The SPS I mentioned above are also voracious growers, so you might also be able to find someone in the club who is willing to frag a small branch/piece off of their colony.

If all else fails, you can also try some of the “unique” zoo sellers online (Blane Perun at http://www.thesea.org/catalog/) tends to sell very-small frags of his items. As well as single 'shrooms, and other interesting items.

Unfortunately, while I loved running my nanos, another summer of doing daily top-off’s made me break down and buy a larger aquarium (I would highly suggest getting an auto top off solution if you plan on keeping them through the summer heat. I can send you some good links if you need them, they run about $20-30 or so and will make your life SO much easier). Besides the top-off situation I was starting to get concerned that adding the chemicals directly to the main tank (I didn’t run a sump/refuge) might be hurting some of my corals (The calcium was my main concern as it really freaked out my ‘shrooms (and if it didn’t dissolve correctly, little bits would “burn” a hole right into a ‘shroom. They recovered in a couple of days, but still…).

Overall all though, nanos are blast to maintain and watch, I hope your experience goes as well (or better) then mine! (They got me hooked!) :D

Hey Achu.

I'm curious to learn more about your setup. What kind of skimmer are you running on the Eclipse? Did you have to modify the hood at all? Also, how did you manage to get that much lighting into that little hood?

Hi Achu,

I am running a 5g bowfront nano with 2x 13w PC 50/50s and the AHSupply reflectors. I have a 175 watt MH on the waythough and plan to upgrade to a drilled 20 I have in the closet. It's my first SW tank :)

I am slowly stocking it, thus far with frags from hobbyist tanks and "leftovers" from the LFS's. The biggest thing I have added so far is a mat of GSPs, and I had to frag them in half because they were destined for a bigger rock than I have room for on my sand.

Vandur, thanks for all the hints! I've had SPS in the past, but with my last move... Well, things didn't go so well with the move... Yes, can you please post or PM me some information on the autotopoffs?

Shroomboy, you know my story (hey, did you find a "nano-sized" Dr. Seuss tree frag for me yet?).

I use to have the reefer's dream... a million bijillion gallon backyard reef. No water changes required, no scraping glass... etc.etc... you'd have to bring your snorkel or dive gear to go see it! Well, before it became ACHU's million bijillion gallon reef, it was known as Jaques Cousteau's reef. Yup, I got to live on the island of Cozumel, Mexico for 2 years.

Well, after moving back, I knew that I might make a few moves before getting into a permanant home. So, I decided get a nano. (imagine the withdrawel of losing a backyard reef!!!)

So, at first I retrofitted the 6 gallon eclipse hood with 2-13W pc's. It isn't hard, just remove the lighting that comes with the Eclipse and put the 13W's in its place. Then I cut out the notch at the back of the hood to fit the CPR BakPak. That went well for months.

I decided that I needed more lighting. So, I hung 2 NO actinic 15W (or are they 18W?) From the kitchen cabinets.

I wasn't satisfied, so with my last and FINAL move, I've given up the hood entirely, I got a reflector from AH Supply and have 3-13W 10K PC's fixed onto the reflector. The 2 NO Actinics are hanging on the bottom of the top kitchen cabinets. For now, the reflector is sitting on a piece of plexiglass on top of the tank. I think in the near future I'll hang it off of the cabinet next to the Actinics.

I'm still trying to figure out where all of you hide all that wiring... I tried to tie it together and "lead" it away from the tank and down the wall to the ballasts, but still, it is not the prettiest thing if you look closely (good thing it is all hidden behind my tank)

After all that, I'm very tempted to get a 10 gallon, but I don't think it will fit between my kitchen countertop and the cabinets above...

All in all, I've been really surprised at how stable the tank is. (when I'm not moving every 6 months...)

Achu,

California Reefs (http://www.californiareefs.com/forsale.htm) made the first auto top-off system that I had seen/heard about. It hit the Nano Reef discussion board (http://www.nano-reef.com/) a while back and seems to be a real hit with everyone who has purchased them. They range from $25-60.00 depending on if you need just the switch or if you want to buy the whole kit.

(You will love yourself for buying one once summer rolls around. I was getting between 4-12 cups of water evaporation a day off of my 20 gallon and 4-6 off of my 10 gallons. This can be an increasing annoyance as the summer progresses. It also causes a lot of stress on your reef life too (PH/Salinity changes).)

As far as nanos in the kitchen, LOL, I found that a 10 gallon would fit under the cabinets, but once it was there, it wasn’t really functional. I ended up setting my two up on different ends of my bar. :D

Oh, and if you would like some “green on green” GSP. Please let me know, I have a bunch of it, and could probably scrap up a small chunk or two for you. I will warn you though; it seems to be highly aggressive as far as growth goes. Anything it touches it will grow over (i.e. in a month a 2” patch will grow .5” -> 2” or more). Containing it can be interesting, but if you have just a small rock of it, and you leave it in the sand, you can keep it a nice little island of green. :D

Jasontatro,

Still in town, still working for the same company out of Nevada! LOL. They seem to not mind me here for a while, so i am still around town! :D (Sorry for stealing your thread Achu.)

My same offer goes out to all the nano reefers, not sure how much I can give, but I have a ton of green-on-green, star polyps I can give away. If you are a nano-reefer looking for some small frags of this, I can peel some off and glue it to a rock for you. :D

I have that auto top-off Vandur mentioned, no more lifting that 5-gal jug to topoff! It is seriously a worthy investment, whether you buy premade or make your own.
Vandur, u have a PM about the GSP.

topoff

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll get an auto topoff float switch. You are right, if I think the evaporation is bad now, I can't imagine what it will be like during the summer!

Cookie, how are those clowns doing?
