My main computer ( WindowsXP) is in a terminal round of lock ups, system disk errors and attempts at registry recovery attempts.
When it locks, I hit the reset button only to load in dos with the message that a disk read error occurred, press Ctrl+Alt Del to restart.
It boots to safe mode sometimes (after 5-6 minutes) and locks at the welcome screen, sometimes at the fully loaded desktop.
When I try and do anything it locks.
Sometimes I get a Windows message:
Windows Registry Recovery
One of the files containing the System Registry had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy.
The recovery was successful.

Then the pc locks up again.

Got it once to boot in safe mode and was able to get to system restore, set it to go to a month ago.
Went through the whole restore process and in the end it said it could not be restored?

I need someone to help get this computer working either back in perfect shape, well enough to back up all email and a variety files.
I'll find some zoanthids you might like and cash.

Well some a program in Windows started a program with a blue screen that said
Checking file system on C
one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency.
well there were a number of lines ( maybe a hundred)of text that I didn't understand with lots of error in indexes and files.
Now it has rebooted in normal mode and it is alowing me to move pictures and files to a thumb drive. If I can save my data the only thing I'd want is a system reinstall.
Can anyone help with that?

Hey Martin,
If you get all your files backed up I have a program that will erase the whole disk so you can re install windows. If you don't have a windows disc I can provide that also.

Still have the MacBook. Got a couple tips yesterday from fragman. It's a slow learning curve with it, but I'm still a pc guy. Even though I don't know much about them.

I'm still baffled about what happened yesterday with the pc. I guess widows can do some of it's own diagnostics and repair itself.

But I still want to do a wipe and clean install.

hey finn you when that screen comes up. does it say NTFS. If so It will take for ever. the computer is scanning your entire system. it is trying to fix what ever is wrong.Have you let it go all the way through or do you reboot it . I will come down today and help you out if you want, What I can't do my brother in law, will be able to help me get it done. let me know. Crystal

I did get it back to a relatively stable computer,,,, but you can tell that it isn't right.

I do need someone to do a complete wipe and clean install of the os.

I can do it, but it's a bit of a drive. It's actually really easy.
Basically all you do is change the boot sequence so it boots from CD, then you run the install, you want to completely erase the hard drive once you have gotten all you stuff you want to keep first. It should be pretty straight forward.

Ahh, ok, gotcha.
Like I said, I would do it but it's a far drive. I'm sure there's someone down south that would be willing to do it.
Maybe if you're in the area sometime......

Do you have an XP disc? You live on the north side or south side of Olympia? I could do it for ya, just wondering how far you are.

One question about the tutorial and what I've been told. Is it better to do a complete hard drive wipe, before doing a reinstall?
As in clean install of the os?
