Im setting up a new 70 gallon SW Tank I was supose to have It set up by now. Im behind because Im getting my RO/DI and Refugium tomorrow and they are a week late. I alredy ordered 100 pounds of Live Rock and was told that it was going to ship in 4 days from now to my suprise they shiped the LR alraedy and it will be hear in TWO Days . I know you cant put the live rock in a new tank without letting it run for a few days. I have a 45Gal Rubbermade that I was thinking of putting the live rock in first . do I do this or just Put the LR in the tank When I get it. Please Let me know some options Thanks :?:

I think the main thing about putting rock in a tank is there will be die off as the cycle begins, starting with ammonia. This is totally normal and exactly what you want to happen, for a while your tank will be toxic so make sure not to add any fish for a while. Good luck

I should add, once you have a tank up and running with critters inside, you want to keep any new uncured LR in another tank before adding it to your main tank, because it can cause a nutrient spike.

P.S. If you need additional water to fill your tank, RO/DI water from safeway does a fine job. 35 cents per gallon and you fill yourself. It will hold you till you get your RODI filter.

I'd say put the LR in the tub with a heater & one or two power heads. Oh yea do like BCT182 & mix up your salt with some ro/di from the store that will hold you until you set-up your tank, you can take your time with that. I kept LR likt this for a long time & when your ready, use it and part of the water, this will keep the cycle going.

What Is The Gpd Of Your Ro That You Are Going To Be Using. Is Your Live Rock Coming Directly To You Or Thru A Lfs? If It Is Coming Direct To You Than You May Not Have The Time To Deal With Ro Right Away.i Would Mix Salt With Reg Tapwater Just To Hold The Rock From Dieing Off More, And Three Or Four Days Wont Hurt It Being In Reg Unpurified Saltwater. I Know The Purest On This Site Would All Freak Out But In A Pinch It Will Work I Had Seen Tanks Ran For Years With Reg Tap Water Dechlorinated With Lil Repercussions Then Once You Get The Ro Setup And The Tank Filled And Good To Go Then Tansfer The Rock It Will Also Give You Time To Inspect The Rock For Dieing Sponges Etc. Good Luck

Thanks I mixed up some tap water in the rubbermaid and added salt and a powerhead. the RO/DI pumps out 100 GPD. The Live Rock is from Saltwater.com

I guess Im not a purist. LOL I agree with the plain old tap is fine for curing live rock, especially if your from out there in washington where you guys talk about 40 tds from the tap. LOL I have done it here with 260-300 tds from the tap. LOL Steve

Hey Steve I Understand I Lived In Colorado For A While And I Cannot Believe They Actually Allow People To Drink Municipal Water. Do You Have A Skimmer You Can Run In The Tub If So Use That And Carbon But Only In The Tub Cause It Will Interfear With The Curing Cycle And Place A Heater In There Also
