Hello all,
In the process of setting up my tank, 72 Bowfront with a Remora Pro, 2 Seio 620's, and a Power sweep. I came across a guy tearing down a monster 400 gallon reef. This tank has been set up since 96. He had a plenum set-up with approx. 400 lbs of sand. He was selling the sand for .50 cents a pound so I bought 75 lbs. What a mess when it came time to disturb it!!! As you can imagine my tank is a mess, should i buy a hang on filter to try and clear my tank as well as a gravel vacuum?? I also bought some nice rock from him that has mushrooms and assorted things.
Another question, i bought the skimmer used so i dont have the book on it, how do you adjust it..... wet foam, dry foam?????
Thanks....John

Hi J! Wow this is a tough one, I would skim wet & try & get things cleared up, test your levels regular also because that Sand had lots of life in it. Is this fine sand or course? I would vacuum the course, I don't know what you can do with the fine sand. I hope the sand isn't so full that all it does is cause problems, when you mix up a bed like that you usually release lot of waste & toxins, not something you want, you could of seeded a new sand bed with a cup or two of it & done just as good if not better. I would do like I said run the skimmer very wet, If you have a sock filter use that also & run lots of carbon to clear things up, test lots & see how it goes, I think you'll be ok because I would guess he used a courser sand type because of the plenum.

Hey thanks Scooter! The sand is probably more of a medium mix, not very fine. Had i known it was this loaded i would of just used a little to seed a new bed, to late now! Do you know how to make the adjustments on the Remora Skimmer??

No I don't but I think Krish or skimmerwhispher does, shoot either one a pm. I think you will be ok, just for now use lots of carbon, replace it every two or three days to get things cleared up & use a few cups each time. keep us posted on how it goes, It may clear up rather quickly. Oh yea if you can vacuum it throughly first.

Do you know how to make the adjustments on the Remora Skimmer??

I'm pretty sure that the only way to adjust a Remora is to adjust the position of the o-ring on the collection cup. To skim wet, you would move the o-ring up, so the cup will sit lower inside the skimmer body.

Ok thanks. On the intake tube at the "U" on the inside there appears to be a screw you can adjust, it was midnight last night by the time i got home with the sand and and rock so I didnt have much time to play with it. This morning before i left the skimmer seemed to be skimming "wet" as the collection cup had mostly very brown liquid in it, not alot of foam.
Thanks for any advice you can give!
John

That screw is just for removing to clean, as far as I know. The adjustments are made by raising or lowering the o-ring. This inturn, raises or lowers the collection cup. Here's a link to Aqua-C's website where you can find out more about the Remoras. I have one and love it.

To clear up your sand storm in the water, you might try a HOB with filter mesh or a sponge for a few days. That worked great for me. Just remember to remove the media as soon as things clear up. You may also need to remove and rinse the media if it gets too clogged. Good luck!!

Thanks returnofsid....... i will buy a HOB on my way home tonight. Thanks for the link.
