Hello everyone,

So I seem to have lost my refractometer since last nigts evening water check. I've checked the whole house inside and have yet to turn up any refractometer.
Would anyone close to Edmonds (Washington) be able to come by with one and check my water change waters sg?? And maybe if anyone has an extra refractometer that they are maybe looking to sell?? Thinking I might have to buy another one since mine has grown legs and is gone.

You can send me a PM if you can help. I'll be available until around 3 pm today and then afetr 11 am tomorrow.

Cheers,
Alex

Hello Alex

I live in Lynnwood and I have an extra refractometer for sale, $30. I bought a new one recently because I thought my last one was off, but the new one matches the old one (the trick is that it needs to be calibrated with RO/DI rather than 35 ppt SW). If you want to bring over a water sample, I would be happy to test it using both refractometers. If you bring a large enough sample, I can also test it with my floating hydrometer. For that I'd need about 32 oz of SW sample.

Refractometer has been found, Crisis has been averted. Found wrapped in a towel, go figure. :)

Cheers,
Alex

According to the docs on my refractometer is says distilled water.

My new one says the same. But there's been a lot of press about how it's more accurate to calibrate with a 35ppt SW solution, or to use both. In the case of my original refractometer, I get funky results if I calibrate with anything other than distilled water or RO/DI.

Good job locating the missing tool. :)

I have extra instant ocean hydrometer free if you want it.

Thanks for the help but I found my refractometer this afternoon.

Guess I wrapped it into a towel whil drying it off last night and then sat down to watch tv and forgot to put it back. :)

Press? :D Seems to me it would be very difficult to have a 35ppt reference since SW is such a dynamic compound (maybe with individual portion controlled packets like Neptune uses for conductivity probe calibration).

And although I do calibrate mine with RO/DI water most of the time, there again my filtered water may not be 100% all the time. Hmmm...maybe I ned a bunson burner and a couple more pieces of lab glass? :D

Posts? Those P-words, you know...

I was referring to the American Marine/Pinpoint packaged samples of SW that are labeled 35 ppt.

Whatever floats your hydrometer, Jonathan. :p By the way, I found my receipt for the hydrometer beaker so I'll send you a link for that...

sweet. make that salt water up yet?

Hey, you don't think we should ALL be making our own distilled water?

I am not saying there wouldn't be any by-products! In fact, I think the leftover juice from my CO2 injection on my FW Planted Tank would be a good place to start. That stuff is potent.
