New2thepond here. I have a 55 gal tank set up with a 20 gal sump. I am looking for help figuring out how and where to set up a purification system for fresh water and saltwater for use in topping off and water changes. I need enough water to fill the tank first. Anyone have any designs that do not need a lot of space. Or is there something else I can do. I have not had my tap water tested yet. I am on a small township community system with very good water pressure.

First you need an ro unit there are many on the market. the problem is you need some where to store water I use a 35 gallon spare tank and run my ro water there. I use a float valve to keep it from over flowing. do you have a garage or an empty closet to set equipment up in..

RO/DI units don't take up any space at all. You can get them with faucet adapters, so when your done with it, unhook and put under the sink. If your handy with plumbing at all, you can also tee it into you water line under the sink and keep the whole unit the permanently. These units don't take up much space at all and are a must!

I would suggest investing in a ro di unit! They say the water is good where im at too, but since ive had one, man do i see a difference!
good luck!

Well, what I was thinking was T'ing in a RO/DI unit into my cold water line for my washing machine and setting up a tall container in my laundry room to hold the water. Does this sound like it would work? germ, you mentioned a float valve. I understand the reasoning, and if I saw a diagram on how to hook one up I would understand it, I just can’t envision it right off hand.

I have our RO/DI unit hooked up in the laundry room (it was the easiest place to hook it up with a storage container). We are using one of those rubbermaid brutes with a lid and I also have a float switch hooked up to mine. Float switches are pretty simple to do and pretty handy no need to worry about when to turn the RO/DI unit off :)

Would there be any possibility that you would be able to take pictures of how your is installed and send them to me. [email protected]

It would be extremely helpful to figure out how I am going to do it.

your plan sounds good with the tall container as far as the float valve goes just run down to the hardware store and look for float valve look for one made out of plastic you dont want to use copper or brass it may leach stuff in to your water. drill a hole to mount the float valve in the container where you want the water level to be then hook up your water supply from the ro unit to the float what ever it takes to do the job fittings ect... hope this helps..

Hey, every suggestion and advise helps. And is really appreciated. Do any LFS's sell RO/DI's. I work in Seattle and live on the Kitsap Peninsula. The Bremerton, Poulsbo, Silverdale area. Or do you know who the best online distributor might be?

Marine depot.com is a good starting place

I can take pics later today but I bought my RO/DI unit thru Air Water and Ice a sponsor on here and I love my unit and service with them is the best. They even sell units including the float switch so all you have to do is buy yourself a container and your good to go I highly recommend them :)

Check out thefilterguys.biz they dont make outragous claims nor are you paying for something that is supposed to be better because it being marketed for aquariums. Prices are the best and the quality is great.
