OK, just got a new fish, and I put it in a QT tank.

I did it just for observation, but now that I am observing he seems to have something.

The fish looks he has dust on his body. The dots aren't on the fish, more like stuck to the fish. They are very small, I think I could see them if they were a little smaller, but just barely. They are black in color and there is not a concentration of them in any peticular area.

Any thoughts as to what this is? Or on how to treat?

Thanks,

Brett

what kind of fish is it?????

A yellow tang. :D

does it look like this???

Yes, it does look like that. Although, the one in the picture looks worse, mine has much fewer spots.

I have not noticed any dots on the fins, don't know if that makes a difference.

Ok, so of all the symptoms listed he is only acting nervious. Not so bad relative to the other ones. :doubt:

Treatments include one 10-15 minute freshwater bath daily on five consecutive days; or a 1mg/L or 1ppm Trichlorfon on three consecutive days. Also a 2g/100L Picric acid for one hour could be administer.

Does this sound like a good way to treat it to you guys? Also, how exactly do you do this?

Thanks Ron for the quick reply, this is starting to look a bit worse than "just a case of ich".

could be black ich ....be sure first though!!!!!...if it is ,a couple of FW dips at 3 day intervals will clear it right up...use some RO/DI water and buffer it to the exact ph as the tank water(same temp as well)..i do dips in a large bowl..you will need to aerate the water with an airstone prior to the dip for 20-30min...keep the fish in the dip water for about 20min..if the fish starts acting erratic, take it out and return it to the tank..you will need to vacuum the bottom of your tank daily as well

will this work to raise the ph? Reef Buffer

It's a bare bottom QT is the vacuming still necessary? Am I aiming to suck up the parasites?

....that may work..you may want to ask Boomer to be sure..i use Kent Superbuffer......about the vacuuming...yes!!! i was adding just a tiny, tiny bit to my bowl of water..let it aerate for a bit and check the ph..adjust accordingly..you may have to keep adding more...do it very little at a time..once you add too much, you have to start over

Are they the same parasite?

I've seen both tubellarian and Paravortex sp. used as the parasite name, but another page said that Paravortex sp. is in the class "tubellarian". Is this right?

If so, which treatment method would you suggest?

Your first link says this:
Treatments include one 10-15 minute freshwater bath daily on five consecutive days; or a 1mg/L or 1ppm Trichlorfon on three consecutive days. Also a 2g/100L Picric acid for one hour could be administer.

But you said (and I've seen this treatment elseware too):
(2) 20min FW baths with 3 intervals.

here is the lifecycle...

The life cycle of Paravortex sp.

Noga (2000) describes the life cycle of the parasite as follows. Juvenile turbellaria attach to the host fish and grow from around 77 to 450 μm. After around 6 days, they drop off the host and fall to the substrate where their eggs and larvae develop internally for 3 to 4 days. The adult's body wall ruptures and up to 160 juveniles escape and can immediately infect any susceptible hosts. The life cycle takes around 10 days at 24.5°C (76°F).

Thanks Boomer.

I'm going to fool around today and try to make some sutable FW-dip water.

once you add too much, you have to start over

So I can not just add some more FW to balance? am I understanding this right?

you can , but i found that it takes alot of water to dilute it down..it seems easier to just start over with a little bit of water

Ok he is about to go in the FW dip. How do I capture him? You're not supposed to use a net on tangs right? What about his spikes? Do they hurt?

edit:

i was adding just a tiny, tiny bit to my bowl of water.

If anyone is tagging along on this one, I have a clairification for you. When Ron says "just a tiny, tiny bit", what he really means is... open up the buffer container on the other side of the room for 2 seconds. The ammount of buffer that floated, in the air, accross the room into your FW bowl is enough.

did you use too much??? when i said tiny bit, i meant a tiny pinch about the size of a tic tac or smaller:D ...you can use a net..just try to be careful and not struggle with him...his spikes will hurt if they get you:badgrin: ..try not to get his spikes tangled in the net as well!!! let us know how it goes

did I use too much

I used too much about 5 times

The ammount that worked was, two dry pinky touches to the surface of the buffer.

i found that after you add the buffer, you have to let it aerate for about 15 min and check the ph again..it gradually falls... how did the dip go?? how long was it???

Yes, exactly!

how did the dip go?? how long was it???

I think it went pretty well, it isn't dead yet. :D My temp never varied more than a degree or two from basic. I got the pH colors to match pretty well. I did the dip for about 25min. In the mean time I did a real good WC and vacuume job.

I did a bunch of reading that suggested that the FW dip was stressfull. I thought they were talking about the fish being stressed, I didn't think they were saying I was going to need a prescription for prozac.

I'm glad I did some reading and got you'lls help on this. Thanks.

So I have one more to do on Friday evening right Ron?

edit:
The fish seems a little lathargic and at times seems to be resting on his belly at the bottom of the tank. I assume this is just a recovery period he is going through?
