Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

I have seen one of these in person and I think they are fairly well set up. I would get rid of the ceramic media and make damn sure to clean the sponges in fresh SW EVERY week. I also think they represent a good value. I really like how they have made the entire top lift up so you aren't limited in getting your arm inside the tank.

ejthomp,

I did some research on nanotuners.com and was able to find red sea max for $639 w/o a stand. Have you thought of other nano tank options? i.e., JBJ, Oceanic Bio Cube, etc...there are basically the same as a red sea but not as much money..

just something to think about....

I'm looking at all of them! This is the fun part. I've found the Red Sea Max for $600 plus $150 for the stand. I'm not making my decision based on which costs less, I just want the most well-built, functional, yet attractive unit. A hundred bucks either way isn't going to sway me.

suggested retail on the Red Sea Max is $599. Anyone selling it for more than that is really gouging. Custom Aquatic has the tank , stand, and starter kit combo for $679, but then there is shipping.

This unit seems o.k. for lps and soft corals. It would seem hard to keep sps as the skimmer and lighting are not strong enoughp in my opinion.Hpefully it will be in a cool spot in your house as it may get hot with a lid on it during summer.Maintence of the skimmer and the sponges might be tedious to accesss ?
I am begining to love lps more and more ! :)

Thanks for the info. I've been wondering how many people use coolers here in the PacNW. Will I need one? Our home has central air and if it gets much over 80 we usually have it one.

I dont use a cooler yet and I have a 180 gallon. However ... I also keep fans atop the tank on and the top of the tank is open and the canopy is somewhat open as well also there is air conditioning keeping that room at 72ºF.

ejthomp,

cooler=chiller ???

I am trying to avoid a chiller on my 375 gallon setup. I installed an attic fan with a therometer control on it. When it gets 78 in the garage, the fan automatically turns on. I have a return vent on the door to the crawl space to force cool air into the garage when the fan is on. I will also have fans on the top if the tank as well as in the sump. this will be my first summer here in the NW, so I will have more raw data to give you in a couple of months.

.... I don't know if I want to go that far though. My house is only a few years old so I'm not into punching holes just yet.

Seems to be just the time, to "punch holes" - bet you will someday. :D

I really have to take issue with
My house is only a few years old so I'm not into punching holes just yet
....

The primary reason why I bought my house was so I could punch holes in it!

If you have a controller I would reccomend having the lights turn off when it gets too hot automatically for your peace of mind !!!
:)

Paul,

I do not have a controller. Can you recommend two brands that I can research??

Kirk

My favorite brands for controllers are:

#1: Aquatronica - My primary controller, these controllers are so adaptive. I can really control as many aquariums as I want with their simple upgrade-ability. A very clean interface with great organization. There are so many additions to this including limitless pH probes, temperature sensors, controlled pumps, etc.

#2: Neptune Aquacontroller - This is the controller I've used the most in the past. They are very useful, though often hard to program or just walk up to and use.

#3: Aquadyne Octopus - This controller is almost the same as the Neptune, though it has less additional features, such as the new wavemaker, lunar cycles, etc.
