I've kept freshwater fish in the past but not as a serious hobby. I thought I would post here and join the Puget Sound reefing community, who knows when i'll need advice.
So the story goes, my roomate and I are sitting around wondering what to put on a half-wall we have in our apartment. I say (mostly joking) "Hey! Lets put a fish tank there, something small that we can build, maybe keep goldfish or something". From there it just got bigger and more expensive.
After 3 months of building and planning we put it in last night.
Its about an 80 gallon saltwater tank. 7'4"x1'x1.5' There is a divider to create a small sump on each end of the tank that we are covering up. We are putting all the heaters and AquaC Urchin Pro and wiring in there so we wont have any wires or things hanging in the visible tank.
This week I am ordering the 100 lbs of rock and the 70 lbs of sand and should have it by the end of the week.
Heres the tank just after it was solvent bonded together. Its 1/2 inch thick. Thats overkill for the height of the aquarium but I didn't want to take the chance of giving our downstairs neighbor a swimming pool in thier living room.

I turned the faucet on at 8pm and let it run full blast. The water purifier managed to make 45 gallons or so in 10 hours.
After reading many many many posts on ReefCentral I think I've managed to get the right equipment for testing. I hope I am prepared for the agonizing wait of having an empty tank with only rock and sand through the cycling period but not being able to have fish.
Speaking of rock, the stores in the area seem to have VERY expensive rock (cured or uncured). I've been debating on going with www.drmaccorals.com or even TampaBaySaltwater.com. Does anyone have a preference?
